The cost of DERV/35sec gas oil/ULS Gas oil is virtually no different, it only becomes different when its in free circulation and the taxation elements are taken into account and the chemical marker added, anybody can ring up HMRC and get a quantity of there DERV changed to red (ULS gas oil) and claim the tax rebate back on what they paid on DERV, it makes no odds to the refiner or the fuel supplier as its only taxes that change the cost of DERV/ULS gasoil/35 sec gas oil & the cost of the HMRC man coming out is just divided by the number of thousands of litres (e.g HMRC man costs £100 to come out and he drops dye in 20000L of DERV to mark it as rebate that adds 0.5p to each litre) The reason 35sec gas oil & marine gas oil have lower Cetane Number (CN) is the engines using it are generally bigger and slower revving than car or truck engines and not all countries run rebate fuels though they do have a rebate system for DERV used away from the road, our 35sec gas oil has a CN rating similar to standard DERV at the pump in the USA or Canada who use ASTM specs, this is also why lots of tier3 engined tractors that are European built or import into the EU with CE marks sometimes exhibit power loss and require cetane improvers to run a there best hear in the UK on 35 sec gas oil because in lots of parts of the EU they use DERV in there tractors so the injection timing is set up at the factory on EU spec DERV so when it ends up in the UK running on a farm using 35sec gas oil the problems happen. e.g. John Deere UK - Fuel conditioner improves engine performance keep in mind John Deere would obviously prefer to sell you Cetane booster for your 35sec gas oil rather than tell you about ULS gas oil, so some of what is implies is not strictly true as they make no mention of ULS gas oil. As for ULS gas oil it has been around as long as the HMRC have been dropping markers in DERV just to keep industry going so there is no shortage of rebate fuels DERV = BS EN 590: 2000 ULS gas oil = BS 2869:1998 & (ULSG) BS EN 590: 2000 35sec gas oil = BS 2869:1998 Anyone has problems understanding/believing what I say then do some reading using key search words like “ultra low sulphur gas oil” “ULSGO“ “ULSD“ “ultra low sulphur diesel“ “Cetane” “Cetane Number” “35sec gas oil” “red diesel” “BS EN 590” “BS 2869” etc etc or just look at the spec sheets available from fuel suppliers in the UK available from there web sites for the different grades of fuel they sell, its not rocket science and neither is HMRC notice 75 (under section 8 - exemptions) if you want to educated your self as to when rebate fuels can be used.

for the most part that is correct, with the exception of Fastrac, Unimog, and some other low production volume past/present oddities ALL tractors in the UK must not exceeded 20mph regardless of if that have 40kph/50kph/65kph gearbox ratios, to exceed 20mph they need individual brakes on each wheel, the brakes should be a minimum of >50% braking efficiency for each wheel & cumulatively across all wheels (as per trucks & cars), hydraulic brakes that require the engine running before they can achieve 50% efficiency are forbidden, the steering MUST have a direct link so must have a steering box/rack with draglinks etc so the steering works when the engine is off (hydrostatic is forbidden), all axels must have suspension, @ >25mph lighting regulations apply as per cars and lorries, trailer can only use over-run brakes <3.5t trailers & 2-line fail-safe air brakes >3.5t as per lorry trailers. ALL tractors including Fastrac, Unimog if wider than >2.55m <3.5m including any load or attachments are restricted to 20mph, when wider than >3.5m <4.3m are restricted to 12mph, when above 3m wide notification to the abnormal load officer (police) 24h prior is needed for each police force area or a letter of dispensation from the same officer in each force will save the need for notification, >3.5m width it should be escorted by one or more attendants.

Run it on red but keep in mind there are 3 types of red, marine gasoil (CN35), 35sec gasoil (~CN46), and ultra low sulphur gasoil AKA: city gasoil (>CN51) Most of what you find on farms, quarries, in plant or in some central heating tanks is 35sec gasoil (~CN46) AKA red diesel which doesn’t conform to BS EN590 like DERV dose, only ultra low sulphur gasoil (>CN51) conforms to BS EN590 and cost a couple of pence more per 1L vs. 35sec gasoil. Consequently you will get a marginal power increase over 35sec gasoil by using ultra low sulphur gasoil (or DERV) due to the high cetane number, also you will get better cold starting beneath 0degC and less smoke, also like DERV it has 10 times less sulphur PPM, also winter additive in DERV & ultra low sulphur gasoil to stop waxing generally goes ~3degC lower than that of 35sec gasoil.

If you don’t have a clue what I have said or cannot comprehend its merits and when something becomes a lifting exercise even when its still in contact with the ground or how when at an angle of >45deg that the predominant force becomes gravity acting agenised an object then carry on. As to how you say “inappropriate standard” implying that somehow that applying lifting regulations on top of any pulling regulations and selecting the highest/safest value given in either is somehow bad/detrimental/wrong when dealing with steep inclines is at best stupid on your part. Definition in law of a lifting operation: The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) Interpretation 2.—(1) In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires— “lifting operation” has the meaning given in regulation 8(2); Organisation of lifting operations 8.—(2) In this regulation “lifting operation” means an operation concerned with the lifting or lowering of a load. You will note it dose not say anything about ground contact or lack of it or that lifting only takes place in the vertical plane of gravity, just merely lifting or lowering, so following logic & forces then above 45deg the predominant direction of movement is up/down rather than horizontally (besides mass elements) and the load is being controlled by an attachment above it.
-
Are you saying you think what the HSE is right with regard to what’s lifting and what’s not. How do you think it would go in a court of law if you were dragging something up a 85deg slope, would you argue because it was in contact with the ground it was pulling and not lifting thus exempt even given that 94.44% of the force would be gravity pulling it down the 85deg slope, contrast that with the same object one end of which is moved clear of horizontal ground so only 50% of the load is acting on the apparatus and the other end is on the ground yet you would freely class that as lifting, surely “lifting” has more of a relevance to the vector of gravity thus mass in it being the predominant force acting on whatever apparatus you are using. Surely if logic was in play along with common sense with safety in mind like a responsible worker or business would implement the former above as a lifting operation even though it doesn’t leave the ground especially on angles above 45deg.
-
One could argue that pulling anything up a slope ware if the winch rope was to brake the load would move down hill under the force of gravity could be construed as being a lifting exercise as could any pull at an angle of more than >45deg up or down given the force then is predominantly gravity (>50% of the mass of the object is trying to pull it down hill)

In terms of willow trees it would barely justify being called middle aged Man Willow yet alone Old Man Willow

You would think people in arb would know they have nothing to do with agricultural or forestry activity as it fall under horticultural activity #1 #1 Unless they do predominantly forestry or predominantly agricultural work under the same business. If you didn’t do predominantly forestry/predominantly agricultural but only did arb the you would predominantly horticultural, if you claimed planning under agricultural or forestry you would be turned down rightly as you are not either but if you did it under horticultural activity you would be correct even though agricultural, horticultural & forestry have lots of similar/same planning exemptions.

Toyota Hilux 2.5 HL2 D4D good or bad for towing and general tree work
b101uk replied to Leyburn Lad's topic in General chat
Wile the subtraction of GVW from GTW may equal 2800kg it is well documented in both printed literature and on Toyota UK web site that it is NOT 2800kg it is 2250kg, also the UK spec Hilux is heaver (kerb) and/or has a higher GVW than its EU counter part, if you look on Toyota Germany, France, Spain, Netherlands, Belgum websites you will see the variation in towing weights and GVW with the Netherlands obviously being the highest due to the countries flat nature and the hiluxes lower kerb weight vs. the UK one. FYI: The towing weight on any vehicle is limited to the lowest maximum weight printed on any individual towing component rather than the highest weight printed on the VIN plate! Toyota sales men often dream up excuses for the 2250kg by saying its wrong as it’s the EU specs or an EU brochure, well they don’t speak English in the EU they have there own brochure in there own language printed in there own country and the “EU specs” actually is bullshit because the towing weights change from country to country because of there own local laws, the UK and Germany have the toughest laws thus the UK hilux is 2250kg towing capacity and 3020kg GVW and the German one 2500kg on hills less than <12% (<1:8.3) with the hiluxes GVW limited to 2760 kg (260kg GVW less than the UK one) Or do people think Toyota somehow have an inability to put correct regional info on all there regional websites and in there brochure Unless Toyota UK were willing to change the GTW and the towing capacity on the VIN plate etc and warrant that it will conform to UK spec for hill starting at max GTW then it don’t mater how much it gets the chassis strengthened or the tow hitch reinforced. -
It would make more sense for arb to have nothing to do with the FC, as arb is horticultural and not forestry with respect to the law, the forestry lot have already disowned arb in many respects in the past, about the only commonality between the FC and arb is trees and the rest of arb is just glorified gardening on big plants! As for the associations pushing for association with the FC and mentioning funding in the same breath its just a way to get there grubby little mitts on some money and to try and justify there existence, big them selves up and further there oblique policy of quasi backdoor unionism in an attempt to have a “closed shop” at the lucrative end of arb to line there own pockets and that of whoever pays them dues over time rather than have the free market pick and choose. After all the AA and ISA etc don’t speak for the majority in arb but they are so up them selves they think they do.

Wile it’s a bit silly and he obviously knew he was close, it is really about time heights are given in both feet and inches and in meters given the metrification of the UK and what is taught at school, the height difference could quite easily have been threw over-simplification of mental conversion from feet and inches to meters which is something a lot of UK drivers couldn’t do even if you gave them 5 min’s to sit down and a pen and paper yet alone wile driving! As for “Should be slung out of the country for not being able to read a road sign and barred entry ever again!” do we do the same for all the UK drivers that hit low bridges in much more spectacular fashion?

don’t even bother with a wheeled backhoe if its wet and sticky or just damp with slopes, they sink easily and slide around a lot just in the damp, yes the 4 in1 is good for moving timber but its not as good at moving quantity of timber distance for very long before other things become faster/more efficient.

I like KFC but I am also lazy so I use multiple carters hitches so I only have to pull a bit with my 16st frame, it saves spilling your bargain bucket & gives a healthy safety margin to boot!

Yes 3000psi (~206.9bar) is enough, as it’s the rams piston surface area in conjunction with pressure that denotes the rams output force, I.e. 3000lb (1361.16kg) per 1 square inch of piston surface area.

You would be cursing if you had damp/green wood to cut unless there was an override.

It was useful to add lubricity when sulphur content was reduced, but since the inclusion of ~5% bio-diesel in fuel stocks is now not necessary and was only then relay required for DERV as red still had much higher sulphur/ash content then DERV Now red is moving to the same sulphur content as DERV and includes ~5% bio-diesel in fuel stocks it is not needed. If you wish to add oil you are better with adding ATF periodically as it acts as an injector cleaner but its not a good idea to put it in DERV due to the HMRC not liking it as it dyes the fuel red (though it doesn’t have a chemical marker as per red diesel) The biggest problem was there is 3 types of red diesel of which the lest common one (ultra low sulphur city gas oil) is the only one that conforms to BS EN590 which is the same as DERV from the garage pumps with a guaranteed cetane number >51, your normal red diesel only has a guaranteed cetane number >46 & marine gas oil a guaranteed cetane number >35 Higher cetane numbers = a shorter delay between the start of injection and the start of combustion, hence when something has its injector pump set up for DERV and you put red in it it smokes more and has a little less power then it would if you set the injector pump timing for red, going the other way there is little or no effect I.e. putting DERV in something set for red diesel.

NFU they at lest know what Unimog are.

It depends on the hyraulic power packs drain volume and air space above maximum oil level, They mostly run things that have very little drain, like motors etc which just constantly circulate a fixed volume, rams cause lots of drain if they are single acting with a spring return and less so if they are double acting given that either side of the ram piston is different volumes at max/min extension.

Well at the end of the day its not doing the job properly of changing a chain and doing ALL the things you should check, so from e technical point of view that should be a fail vs. someone who takes 5mins to do it by the book knowing that you could hand it to someone after and it would be safe to use and done correctly.
