  1. Baseline Alloys for me. Had them about 15 years. Changed the top Velcro pads twice in that time. Spikes that are too short are a killer in the knees. The top strap should be 2 fingers below the joint of the knee. Puts far less pressure on your knees. Not sure how it would help the soles of your feet though.
  2. I do run my own business. I still do contract climbing. I find it fun and keeps me on my toes. Fills the gaps between my own jobs. When I was living in London I had no interest other than freelance climbing. I didn’t see the point as I knew I wouldn’t be there forever. Plus there was the risk of getting cleaned out every week.
  3. Even so, many people post and ghost. thanks for following it up.
  4. Without sounding like the four Yorkshiremen sketch. I started on 37 quid a day and was told I had a 5 pound PPE allowance. I thought great, 42 quid a day. Nope, I had some form of tax relief on the 37 quid to the value of a fiver. That was in 2002. I wonder what that would be equivalent today? I was employed. I learnt loads there, so did the bits I was asked of and everything else in between. Lasted a year and a half then left.
  5. IMG_2496.MOV freehand for me. unless it is battered. one of the guys i work with has a Swedish brand of grinder, sharpener. works brilliantly, doesn't damage the tooth and is great for bring a damaged chain back into life.
  6. It is 50000 Nok here in Norway. 4307 of your finest Great British Pounds. Having such a low threshold mean that a person can do one or two little jobs away from their regular employment. BUT if they decide to ‘play’ at another role in life they have to play properly. Seems to work as everyone has to Charge VAT, that and the penalties for tax evasion are high (you would get longer in jail here for dodging tax than being a paedophile), means there is very little ‘off the books’ money. At least that is what I have experienced in the time I have lived here.
  7. How to keep going after 30? Man up and crack on. There are so many people who simply cannot handle the physical and mental demands for this industry. They quit after a few years with some excuse or another: I doubt there is a long term climber out there who hasn't had a serious issue in their career. The difference between them and the short term’ers - they don’t quit when it gets tough. That is the bloody mindedness you need to excel in arb. It is also the same attitude that gets you through the difficult jobs. Too many people out there looking for a easy life IMO. Classic example of someone who cannot hack it, was the fool who wrote the article that was published by the AA. The thread about freelancers being parasites. If it is so called career progression? I can’t think of anything worse than surveying for a utility company.
  8. Oh yes I did. I had it for three years, then there was an incident and my insurance company said it was on the primary contractors insurance. My insurance was worthless. It was cancelled rather quickly.
  9. It is a bad article from someone who appears to be trying to be funny yet clearly isn’t. I wonder why he only lasted a couple of months as a hired gun? Maybe, he just wasn’t able to hack it? I was a parasite for over 12 years in the UK. Kept up to date LOLER records and even helped a few companies get through their AAAC status. In fact, Paul assessed me at least twice. This parasite also paid tax and NI contributions, drove a nice truck (because I could) and wore the correct PPE. What an absolute scumbag I was for not working for a company full time.
  10. had a call out to a snapped out poplar that was hung up over the road. the wind had died out somewhat so did a bit to try and make it safe and fix today.
  11. ‘Kin mental here today. Oslo area of Norway. 28c all day and then a swim in the fjord. The forecast changed and a wall of wind and rain came across the fjord. When it hit us it was a bit mental. Bits of tree flying through the air and I got soaked trying to get things in from the decking and balcony. IMG_5597.MOV
  12. When I was a kid my parent always invited the extended family for a barb on Aug BH weekend. It usually coincided with Teeside Airshow. Saw them many times as we only lived about 12 miles form the airport. My neighbour had a pretty large signed photo of them in her hallway. All the pilots stood with their helmets under their arms and in formation. I asked her if she had bought it at the airshow. She said 'my brother gave it to me, check the name of the guy in the middle.' It was her brother.
  13. Did anyone see a strange glowing light in the sky about midnight last night? My missus was walking home and saw it with her friend. She looked it up on the news this morning and it was a rocket apparently launched in the US that caused a strange orbital glow in the sky and was visible in lots of locations, inc Norway. Lysfenomen observert fra nord til sør – skyldes trolig rom-oppskytning – VG WWW.VG.NO Flere steder i landet har det natt til lørdag blitt observert et spektakulært lysfenomen. 14. Mountains and molehills. What a whole lot of fuss over a used strap-on. Sometimes this world amazes me.
  15. When I sold a house in the Uk I had to declare any ongoing disputes with involving the property. were you informed at the time of purchase?
  16. Top down method for me. I have a Norwegian wood burner in my Norwegian house. The manufacturer recommends the top down method aka the Swiss method. By the time I have built the pile and tucked various bits of paper, birch bark etc I light the top, come back 30 mins approx later and there is a nice glowing full bed of embers, now its time to put the logs on. Some may scoff at the method but I have a modern stove but I burn mostly pine and spruce and birch. Typical for Scandiwegia. We have had the flue cleaned 2 twice by the Kommune and hardly any soot has come out as it burns so hot and clean. The glass is also pretty much soot free with this method. Give it a go, I only light stove fired this way now. It also works on campfires depending on the wind etc.
  17. It’s not like the Welsh rugby side to harp on about previous glorious performances is it? Every team is guilty of that to some extend.
  18. Well done to the Lionesses. My son was going for a shit with 2 minutes to go. He is fifteen. I told him to come back as it might be the only chance he will ever see England win a major trophy. I have waited a lifetime and had a general feeling of disappointment approx every two years. Double bonus. England won a major trophy and my son managed not to shit himself.
  19. Stockton BC have a lot to answer for. Pedestrianising the high street 20 odd years ago do wonders for stopping the passing market trade. Then the decision to dismantle the Castlegate centre and the swallow hotel didn’t help. I fear the damage was done by then as the majority of the shops were closing and a lot of general trade moving to Teesside park. So they are trying to do the town centre up to make it a nicer place. Basically more free areas with a view for the scumbag to hang about on. I grew up in Stockton and each time I go back the difference is startling.
  20. I totally agree. I stand by my smack head comment though. 3 years at Uni and this guy was always in the same place. Between Mc’d’s and HMV. I once witnessed a young child offer the guy their happy meal. I mean his sign said hungry and homeless, so they offered the food. The scum, threw the bag of food back at the kid and said I don’t want your happy meal I want money. That was enough for me. Not all homeless are they same though.
  21. I went to Uni in Chester. Plenty of tourists in that city. The beggars were in the same spot everyday. A few lived near us and we used to see them staggering about and in the local convenience store changing their bags of 1 pound coins for notes. Proper smack heads. On more than one occasion I saw the smack head, beggar getting a taxi to the city centre as he was too mashed up to walk. I remember the commotion as the taxi driver didn’t want to take his “dog on a string’ in the cab. Proper scum.
  22. If it is anything like Stockton. It is just full of Albanians and other Slavic nations. Not like it used to be. I was warned a few years ago back up there. Back I. The day there would be a scuffle and few punch ups etc. now it’s stabbings and the like.
  23. Stoke sounds very similar to Stockton, Middlesbrough and the rest of Teeside: There was a lot of it on going back in the 90’s. A school friend got sent down very young for his part in the family business. He was TWOC’ing them and his dad, uncle and brothers were ringing them. A number of others didn’t get sent down.
  24. A VIN number can be quite valuable. Or at least they used to be. Caveat: I did grow up in the Car Crime capital of UK, Aka teeside.
  25. Can’t look any worse than it does now.
