  1. He said 192 (rear handle) was safer NOT 192t. Do you use a 192 or do YOU mean 192t???
  2. I'm not interested in trying to compete with "fire wood hunters" and am not bothered in the least about them. But insurers should NOT, IMO, advocate the use of such people to deal with hazardous trees. The customer wants an experienced professional and was disgusted that they were suggesting he go for a cheaper option.
  3. No, if Scottish time moves slower, Stevie will be able to get more done, so he will fit a half hour job into 15 mins!!!
  4. So he will do it in less time, surely???
  5. Yes I've had that one before, my bill would be for "making safe", his daughter is having the logs. But they still won't pay
  6. No they won't pay at all, they are just saying I'm too dear (without even seeing the tree) and that my customer can get it done on the cheap.
  7. Got a call at the weekend, a guy I've worked for before, he has a large Cherry that has blown over and is sat on his garage roof. He spoke to his insurance broker who said they would send him a claim form. We are going tomorrow to clear it. He rang tonight to say his insurers have informed him that they will only pay for any damage and not the removal of the tree. He was not at all happy and kept asking to speak to higher people. Then one guy says could you not get a cheaper price?? The his broker Say's "hang on John wants a word with you" So John comes on and says "I can get a mate of mine to come and clear it at the weekend" The customer says "is he a pro??" John says "No he's a teacher"............................ WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If even insurance brokers are advocating the use of weekend warriors, what hope is there????????? Needless to say we are still going in the morning.
  8. Do you prick each sloe with a thorn??
  9. Personal I'm very glad we live in a relatively free country were people can work their socks off for SFA if they so chose
  10. Real good to chip as well!! It seems to sort of polish the inside of the hopper!!
  11. I was thinking that, the thickness of the scales must make a big difference.
  12. .NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:001_tt2: :001_tt2:
  13. Its the micro second one that counts, we thats the one I counted.
  14. Going back the tittle of the thread, "how'r supposed to compete", I would say we should NOT even try. There are guys out there who devote the evenings and weekends to restoring an old car, do you think mechanics loose any sleep over them??? The guys who spend their spare time cutting down trees for fire wood either do it for the love of physical work or put NO true value on their spare time. If they are happy and don't put others in danger doing it GOOD LUCK too em I say!!!!
  15. I reckon if you had just offered the guys who had been dropping off the wood a few quid it would have kept coming. There is now way you could fell and remove trees for less than the cost of bulk timber in lengths, unless you put no £ value on your time. I got into this line of work though felling for my own fire, but the trees were in the field across from my house.
  16. I really like doing big dead Elms, but I hate the tidy up!!
  17. I know the head stones will be recycled, but there is NO WAY human remains will be used as hard core. I worked on a job where there were a few human bones, every time even a fragment was found they had to stop and get a guy to come and collect it. They will lift very old bones from graves and put them in a mass unmarked grave.
  18. There a big difference between a self employed worker on their OWN work and an employee.
  19. Not any more, there was a brief window of opportunity to do that which has passed.
