  1. Mick, my post was related to the number of times I read people saying they charge over £500 per day, yet they are not VAT registered
  2. Edward, does that huge chip on your shoulder make you walk round in circles?
  3. Don't want to sound harsh, but how on earth do you find yourself with a remote controlled tracked grind, which is a fantastic tool to have!! and yet not know what to charge?
  4. They missed the boat plain and simply. Their argument that it was "only by a bit" is nonsense, its like saying a little bit pregnant, no such thing. I would "sharpen the big saw" to quote treequip, and crack on.
  5. Not a fan of ladders personally. I find having to carry them a pain, they easily get destroyed on the timber trailer. I also find customers are impressed that we don't use them and I feel it may make them think the jobs a little more specialised than they had thought, so are less likely to "have a go" But only my personal thoughts
  6. Not sure a promotion vid is about impressing others in the industry, its about impressing your potential clients "Joe public", which ain't too tricky. I chuckled earlier this week when a customer was telling me about the firm they had used in the past, "they were a proper outfit, they had a block and tackle etc" I guess he meant lowering gear
  7. Your cruel!! Although how great must ANY tree job feel after doing that!!! Rough with the smooth and its the rough that makes the smooth feel so good.
  8. Looks like a job for one of those radio controlled jobies
  9. Painting wounds does not prevent pathogen attack, it actually produces the perfect environment for them. Get piece of steak and put it on your kitchen counter top for a day, it may dry out a little, but will be fine. Take a steak, put it in a plastic bag and leave that out for the day, it will get sweaty and slimy. A slight gap will always form between the paint and the cut, this gap becomes the perfect place for infection.
  10. So whats the purpose of the reserve?
  11. Not sure how you have come to the conclusion there are some "bargains"? I scrolled through a a good few pages and found no item where the price had reached its reserve.
  12. Ok, thanks for this. I did not deal with the TO, it was done by the land agent. So in this instance they can insist on 3 for 1 on the not completely dead trees, so its maybe better to wait until they are completely dead, to avoid the need/expense of extra trees. Clearly being proactive and managing your trees is not rewarded. I'm surprised that a replacement is only required once the dead tree is "felled" I would have expected that a replacement would be needed upon the death of the TPO'd tree, thats interesting.
  13. Makes me wonder whether had saws really are safer. I pretty much never use handsaws, use my 020 for everything.
  14. Just to be clear Ben, this is nothing personal. I wish all house prices would stop increasing and in the longer term fall. IMO house price inflation is the biggest con to befall the working man. People are fooled into thinking an increase in the value of their home makes them rich, but how? when won't you need your home? Its a bit like being told your kidneys are work 50K. Ok so you can leave your home to your children (if you've not ended up in a nursing home) and what will they use the money for? Oh yes to try and afford a home. The reality is that house price increases have only helped the rich, the banks and estate agents.
  15. You are of cause correct. Mine was a poor post. I'd been out celebrating my birthday and had a few drinks. I'd seen the news earlier in the day and it had really ticked me off
  16. The situation I have is that I've felled 3 large Beech for a landowner, they were TPO'd. One was stone dead (had been for some time) another was virtually dead (very sparse crown) and the third was dying. The problem I think was wet ground. Consent was obtained for the work from the TO, but they are wanting replacements of 3 for 1, which I feel is excessive.
  17. Thank you Paul, that pretty much backs up my thoughts.
  18. I'm pretty sure a TPO can only apply to a live tree, once a tree is dead the TPO does not apply to the dead tree, hence notice, rather than application. And a replacement tree is required, regardless as to whether the dead tree is felled or not. But I could wrong.
