  1. It depends a lot on your equipment, if you have a large chipper and Hiab crane you can often do jobs much quicker than your competition. A trunk 12' long and 4' thick will take me 15minuets to load onto my trailer, that same trunk would take half a day with two men, saws and a transit. So I don't base my price on how long it will take me, but how long it will take my competitor
  2. I have burn many tonnes of green Ash, often the same day it was felled, it does burn very well, far better than other green timber, but it will tar up the stove glass and your flue.
  3. You have never spoken a truer word Stevie
  4. I love them!!! Just last week I got a client who called me about some trees over a greenhouse, they want me to do the job because of the greenhouse, they know I won't damage the greenhouse, without the greenhouse, I would not have got the job.
  5. Are you doing drugs Stevie????????????????????
  6. Good news Paul, anything that "adds value" to the AAAC scheme has got to be a good thing!!!
  7. It is very unpleasant and not some thing we should have to deal with, but in reality the chances of catching any thing from a needle are very low. Most infections die very soon ofter falling below body temperature, hepatitis B is the one that can live the longest outside the human body, HIV dies very quickly. I don't make this comment to belittle the concern that people are expressing, but to try and ease the concern people may feel if they do have a needle stick injury. We should all take as much care as possible, but don't panic if the worst happens.
  8. If you chain is sharp just cutting any green timber other than Ash should bring it straight off. Its the low water content of Ash that leads to some build up on the tooth, but its not "sap".
  9. Tom were you doing £80K with a transit and 6"chipper?? I do well over £80K with just me and one man, we certainly don't work full time, we do 3 or 4 days per week, BUT I have a much better setup than most and thats what makes me my money. But I'm still competing against guys with minimum kit and on some jobs my kit won't give me much advantage, on others it will, I make my money by do the job quicker. I have been trying to charge more for 10+years, when I push the prices a little I invariably don't win the work.
  10. I can still remember me and my brother-in-law wetting ourselves watching that, it must be over 15years ago now.
  11. But as with Ash, it will tar up your flue and will burn much better dry.
  12. Its far from ideal, but I've done it. I was asked to quote for the removal of some large conifers and a few hard woods from round a factor. They were doing all the easy stuff themselves (some of the cuts they made had to be seen to be believed) They wanted me to do the awkward ones between the factory and a house. We finally agreed on a price (after much haggling) but he wanted to pay in 3 instalments, one on completion and two post dated cheques one for each subsequent mouth. I was not very busy and quite fancied the job, so agreed. Many told me I was a fool and would never see a penny others said I should draw up a contract, I just looked him in the eye and shook his had. He was true to his word, gave me my cheques at the end of the job, they all cleared on the agreed dates.

    Poplar

Burns fine when dry, but is not the easiest to dry and difficult to keep dry.
  14. Does it really exist though???? I've heard stories and rumours of this mythical saw for many years now, but I'm not sure its true.
  15. Yes thats how it appears to me too, which is very encouraging as people tend to resist change, so that suggests the 201 has the edge over the 200 which is very good news indeed:thumbup:
  16. It does burn very well straight from the tree, especially if felled in the winter when the sap is down. But it will still tar up your chimney and will burn far better if seasoned for 6 months.
  17. What will you do when they are worn out??? I like the fact that I took out finance on most of my kit, it taught me to charge what it costs, now its paid for I still charge the same, that way I will have the money to repair and replace it.
  18. Not very nice for you and a riot van is very OTT. But I do feel sorry for the other person, they were no doubt certain that it was their chipper and looking forward to getting it back, I bet they're having an even worse day than you.
  19. Its funny how every subject come round again. I remember at least one other thread that had the very same subject matter.
