  1. As the trees are not protected, if the trench is in land not owned by the hedge owner there may be no civil case, you have the right to cut roots that trespass onto your land, so long as the tree is not protected, as far as I'm aware.
  2. If you believe the trees are covered by being in the CA (which I don't feel they are) who ever dug the trench could be be in trouble.
  3. I would not submit a notice, the councils only option would be to TPO each tree, which I don't believe would be feasible for a maintained Leylandi hedge, IMO.
  4. Climbing in the rain normally does the trick. I put my rope in the washer, in a pillow case, near destroyed the washer and damaged the lino it was stood on, never again.
  5. If this was true most car accident claims would go unpaid. I've claimed on my PL insurance once, theft several times and had a subbie take me to the cleaners with a "no win, no fee" firm, for an accident that was 100% his own fault, all costs were covered (except excess were applicable) without issue. People really bitch about insurance Co's, but in my experience when things have gone bad they have always come through for me.
  6. AHPP, please suggest a sensible alternative to tickets as a means of proving competence? I thought posts 3 and 4 had established its very difficult. Sure tickets aint perfect, in fact I agree they are a bit of a joke, but for the purposes of securing insurance and covering your duty of care as an employer for H&S they really are the only game in town.
  7. Sorry, my method was already covered here.
  8. I think I would bend the stop strap (which prevents the lid going back to far) away from the steel it hits, this will allow the lid to go over centre and you can the bring it back with the mechanism going up instead of down, which will move the springs down to the attachment point. Once the springs are hooked on I think a well placed foot and movement of the lid would push the mechanism back the correct way, them bend the stop strap back into place. I hope that makes sense.
  9. I love the way people slag something off, but still use it
  10. Doing line clearance in the long distant past. "Are we OK to prune your Ash tree back from the power lines?" Owner, " Yes, but its not an Ash tree, its a Plain tree" "No its defiantly an Ash" Owner, "No its a Plain, the farm is even named after it, this is Plane Tree Farm" "Sorry, but that defiantly not a Plain tree, its an Ash tree, they are very different" Owner "No your wrong, its definitely a Plain, in the spring when all the other trees have the leaves its stays plain and gets its leaves later, its definitely a Plane tree. I'm surprised a tree man like you would not know that"
  11. Many, many years ago, in fact nearly 20 years ago. I removed a conifer hedge for an old guy, I was working alone, felled and chipped the hedge, in the centre was an old fence, which I rolled up and put on my pickup on top chip. The agreed price was £100. I went to the door to collect payment, the old boy begrudgingly handed me the cash and said "I never earned £100 for a days work in my whole life" I replied "neither have I" He looked shocked. Then went on to point out that out of that £100, I had tax, NI, payments on my gear, fuel, holiday pay, pension, etc, etc, I could see he took my point, apologised and shook my hand. When people have always had an employed job and never run a business they generally have no idea of the costs involved.
  12. You must not be seasoning it correctly, dry soft wood will NOT tar up your chimney. Hardwood will also tar up your flue if not correctly seasoned.
  13. PL insurance is not a legal requirements, so just crack on, or get insurance and hope that if things go wrong they will payout. Fred did have a runnin with the HSE, read his book, it's very funny.
  14. True, but for the purposes of fulfilling your legal requirements and ticking an insurers questionnaire box tickets are the easiest method. How would you prove competence without them?
  15. Take pic's and make safe, then inform the council.
  16. I would imagine most have tickets, so have no experience of asking for insurance without them.
  17. Lets hope so, no different to shop lifting or hiding in the loo on a train to avoid paying, IMO
  18. Haha, yes had that one many times. Had an even better one a few weeks ago, we were reducing a huge Leylandi hedge round a factory, I was atop the hedge at the rear of one of the properties that backed onto the hedge, an Asian lady came out, pointed at her hedge that ran from the hedge we were cutting up the side of her garden between her and her neighbour and said "are you not cutting those??"
  19. Last winter was great, seemed to rain mostly at night, OK the land got very bad, but we did not seem to loose many days work. I counted 5 frosts the whole of last winter.
  20. It was certainly Christmas for him I bet he can't believe his luck that you keep turning up
