Best bit of kit ever. I love mine even better i got it free, the council were throwing it away as it leaked. I fixed that and its been super ever since.

New pouch for Hi-lifts

I'm going to get myself one of those. Been keeping my hilift in a standard wedge pouch and it just streches it and then is a pain to get out. I've aso borrowed your hammer pouch idea for storing my axe on my belt. Works so so well. -

Iglands are the rolls royce of forestry skidding winches. They keep their money quite well though. Farmi winches pop up on ebay quite frequently. If yiu want a new one then look at the uniforest ones they're well made, strong pull and full of features and VERY reasonably priced. -

Yea it is fun isn't it. Pic 1. Skidding out 10' Chestnut 2010 Pic 2. A very heavy forwarding trailer full of 4.1m Larch sawlogs 25ish on there. 2 weeks ago Pic 3. Big Chestnut felling (Thats from oct 2010 but we did a few more that size this year same wood different compartment) Pic 4. Wednesday Oak thinnings forwarded in Yesterday on a very very heavy trailer. 2 bunks of 9' Oak sawlogs.

I know two girls who are tree surgeons with a loacal company. There was a woman who i worked a few years back who did 30,31,38 wasn't bad at the climbing but she went for an office job in the end. I also know a girl who is training to be one done her 30 and 31. She is or will be a great climber too. There out there

I felled 4 big ones ealier in the year. They're no good for milling the lot went on firewood pile.

Is it clear fell, 1st or 2nd thinnings? Is it a double drum winch? A 10 tonne trailer will be pulling out about 8 tonne of logs at a time. -

I can fell around 8m3 a day as safe bet. Closer to 12 if things are working. Thats cut and stacked too. So a 150m3 would take me about 19 days. Obvioualsy it depends on how many product sizes your cutting say sawlog fencing and pulp is normal. If there is winching involved is that whole tree skidding? That means you can get stuff on ground quicker, skid and process later. -

Yes:lol: Good fun though hard work but fun. There are some very good threads on cutting/extraction rates and costs. 500m3 is a lot of wood. what sort of size? Extraction is where you make your money. Making life easier for the forwarder is key. How big is your timber traier and crane. You'll be wanting at least a 10 tonner to keep things efficent. I'll post more coherent and useful answer tomorrow after i've been to sleep. -
If you know who did it and you had called the police can't the person burning the asbesdos be made to pay. It's totally midless though and like you say whats the point. Just take it to the tip. We had a load of fly tipping on the esate once and it had the contact details of the builders in it. The police were soon knocking on their door!

Ours are budding up for the most part. Most looking shocking thin. Beech and Sycarmore and maples are out in various stages some are fully out.

Practice makes perfect. Are you using a nice sharp file? It makes a massive difference when sharpening once they start to dull i tend to get rid of them. Are you using one of the STIHL/Oregon file holders that sit onto of the file or a Husky one that file rolls across. If your using one try the other. I get a much better result using a roller guide (Husky). There are a few thread on here full of great sharpening tips. Try searching for sharpening.

New haix are a pain as they are very stiff. Once they're broken in i prefer to drive in them.

Treesources is fantastic. Got a load of books from them at the APF and got another load recently.

Two very different vehicles to do very different things. A mog for example can't really carry a load but can have a chipper on the front and a crane on the back. Bits are expensive there are lots of bits to go wrong and they occupy a grey area of what you can and can't do with them. 4x4s however are cheaper can carry a load and go where a unimog can't. Although a unimog can go where a pickup can't. Idealy you want both.

The 575 was ment to replace the 372 but it wasn't as good so the 372 was still made. 576 has superseeded both. I think it's on its last legs now before they stop making it. The new 562xp will replace the 357.
