  1. I know how much I need a day to run a business. I work out how long the job will take and price accordingly. The longer and more complex the job the higher the price. Only experience will lead to reasonable pricing. After 6 years I still make the occasional underprice but these are now thankfully very rare
  2. Bolting of the union may be an option to help stabilise a poor union. Combined with the cable brace this may be an option.
  3. Height wise I would suggest is ok. Ideally it could have been higher. As has been said inspect the wounds and the cable. Rod bracing through unions is to reduce the risk of cupboard door failures where the union opens up like a door. Dynamic bracing whether invasive or non invasive aims to reduce the risk of pealing the union open like is typically seen. If there is a big concern then consider a light reduction or thin also to reduce loading.
  4. Mines got terrafirma heavy duty +2inch just on the rear. Terrafirma gas shocks and a terrafirma extra heavy duty anti roll bar.
  5. I'd retop it myself. Trying to reduce previously topped sycamores I find very tricky as there are usually no growth points other than in the last metre or so of the crown. I will do a proper reduction on them if asked though I'm just never happy with the result. What does the client really want is the question
  6. Standard practice unless you are a farmer and then don't even bother.
  7. Like everyone needs a tree surgeon get yourself a saw and diy it. My tax return and books took me a couple of days in total. Based on my figures it is two days where I could turn over 800-1200 pounds for those two days. Makes 800 pounds to pay an accountant seem well worthwhile to me. In all honesty I did my accounts spread over a few evenings but again my time in an evening is more precious. Hence I will be getting an accountant.
  8. Seems a lot. It only cost 2k for a recon engine and new clutch in my land rover.
  9. Due to one of my usual groundy/climbers being off on paternity I could do with an extra pair of hands Tuesday Wednesday and Friday. Tuesday involves a fair bit of dragging but nothing mega. Wednesday and Friday mostly chipping and logging. PM your number if interested and will contact you.
  10. I would suggest you wouldn't need a certificate of competence as it isn't really a chainsaw and I'm terms of danger will be on a par with a disc cutter
  11. Think I've just bought the one in Preston. Was I up at 6995 on ebay ny any chance. They are out there at the price you want. Check chassis condition. Oil in the ecu loom if td5. Smoke etc. Also check the back if buying a hicap. Dented badly probably means it has had a hard life. Look after them and they are reliable. My current tipper is 20years old and worked hard everyday I notice problems and deal with them. That said the hicap is to become the new tipper
  12. Just give them a price. Don't justify why it costs that much it just does
  13. Could you not just get some fire retardant spray? The anti static one is just daft though. Have you ever used a saw at night and seen the sparks that come off the chain.
  14. He is obviously worried and a bit if a ------ (fill your own word here). Just carry on regardless
  15. Duncan your homemade one can't be that great if you've bent the axle. My stein one has had lumps of wood on that we could only just move between two of us when on the trolley.
  16. No you don't
  17. I can get grease nipples that fit from my local bearing factors. I've got them fitted on mine
  18. Get two grease nipples to fit. Give it a pump or two after every days use. Any extra grease comes out the blade exit point from the gearbox
  19. What and how much are you wanting to tip? Is the job in Standish?
  20. Grass cutting every 2 weeks. Any longer and it is difficult to leave it looking right. It does depend on budget though. One site is as and when. Only strimming and weed killing though
  21. I have a couple of sites and do ok off it. I price in the same manner I do for tree work based on how long the site should take each visit. It maybe that one month you do more on a visit than others but it evens out. Just make sure your price is right for manpower and machines for the length of time you will be there for.
  22. I financed a tw150 5years back. 10%deposit and the 283 quid a month. If I was hiring a chipper it would cost 110 a day round here so 3 uses a month it had paid for itself. It is a big commitment as you would be in it for the long haul.
  23. And what kind of energy is going to be used to produce the torrefied wood pellets. Is it going to be a renewable source. Are the pellets going to be delivered by transport using renewable energy? It is all good and well marketing stuff as carbon neutral but in reality it won't be. In my world microgeneration would be key also every house that can should have solar panels. I would invest in micro hydro schemes utilising wears Tha are currently redundant. Methane capture from sewage. There are many ways but in reality big business will overrule pushing the myth of carbon neutral whilst lining their pockets. The use of torrefiedcwood is good but the supply chain should be vetted as using renewable sources to create the temps required for torrefication.
  24. Island don't be thinking there is less work in a bsc. Although I'm in the same boat as to thinking of continuing after I finished my level 4 also
  25. Looks good. I had some to mill but the nutjob who works for me ringed it up into 3inch rings now it is no good for anything to small even for firewood. I don't usually tell him off but he got a severe telling off for that. Any plans for it.
