yes very true but what vehicle got stuck driving through the river bit on long way down, yer got ya there. Landy would have made it no probs. A landy is the real 4x4. And look way nicer and more adaptable so really there just better.
  3. yer your telling me, to be honest college isnt great and if you ask me the teachers who are teaching it should have more experience and qualifications, no offence to any of you if your reading this. but then the whole corse is a bit sh!t i mean today we spent all afternoon shifting horse sh!t now im pretty sure that isnt required to much in our industry. we have also spent more time doing fences this year than any tree work.

what the fuel consumption like on a Hi lux. Id really like one but I do about 400 miles a week at least which in my saxo cost me about £50 about 45mpg and I dont really want to be paying a fortune for petrol. I no its going to be quite a bit more though.

  6. u think they would give me a morgage for that much even though im 18 still at college and not employed or even self employed as yet. i think ill be lucky. that pretty cheap though for what it is. how come?
  7. cheers for the pics now i know how to use it. I have to portawraps one like that and a flying capsman or what ever it is. we use the flying thing one at college and it seemed to take the teachers a bit of working out which was very reasurring. but i havent used either of mine yet for my own jobs desperatly wanting to though to try out the rest of my new rigging kit. whats the general thought of using a ratchet strap to secure it at the base.
  8. i was under the impression that it is mainly done for habitat purposes or conservation. its so the tree reacts as it would if the limbs where to fall off naturally so decay and fungi can get in aswell as bugs and other creepy crawlies.
  9. well i didnt think i did till some pikies broke into my car, a saxo not an obvious choice for tree surgeons and nicked a hedge cutter as wells as top handle, ipod, wallet, cd player and even my deodrant. And it was all covered up nothing visable. Police reckon they had been watching me for some time so knew exactly what i had. thefing pikies hate them.
  10. i keep my climbing kit in my bedroom its handy having ropes and stuff near the bed haha. only because everthing else is stored somewhere else and i need it regularly so its handy there. just stinks when it gets wet but at the gf most the time. allowd to keep saws in there unfortunatly. anything else is kept in an alarmed shed then locked to work bench with another alarm. and also have a carbinet bolted to garage floor for when having saws at home.
  11. depends on what it has been chipping and if its started up a the start of the day and left running or only started when a pile is ready for it. some one could easily of painted it as well.
  12. Id be very interested if i had the money I can afford 750 but cant stretch to 75000. hope it all goes well though for you.
  13. wish i hadnt lost mine now! just have to buy another one and make a vid.
  14. I have recently be asked to quote for a 3 year maintenance contract. it involves cutting all the hedges some twice a year and the tree work for the 3 years. I have only ever quoted for individual jobs before and nothing like this. Has anyone got any tips or advice on what to do and what i need to think of. I have heard that you should include inflation at about 10% each year is this correct.
  15. i think more take downs. but i think this is because unless you get a customer that really likes there trees people dont want to spend money on having reductions and thins the only thing they will pay for is to have it removed completely. and some will only pay for that if they are told its dangerous and really should come down for safety. I also think that people who decide to have there trees felled due to them blocking sunlight dont realise that a crown lift or thin can help rather than just felling it.
  16. I have heard people saying this. And yes that is what it says but I dont really no because what is the point in people doing a LOLER course if you dont need it. I always have mine tested by a qualified inspector but then again I have only being doing tree work for a year or two so I wouldnt call my self competant. Also talking to my boss who is a qualified inspector there seems to be alot more to it than I realised and stuff I wouldnt even think of. I think testing your own stuff is bad though as you are less likely to fail something and just think it will be ok its only me using it and i cant really afford a new one just yet and so you pass it. But if someone else fails it you dont have much choice. but then thats just my opinion.

    Split beech tree

that sure was a big tree nice work.

    Pecontools!

I havent used a MEWP as yet but i always thought that that you still rig sections off the tree and the only thing the cage is for is to give you a platform to work from. hence mobile elevating work platform.
  19. a local shop to me wont sell you a tied prussic loop. not that i cant tie my own, just got onto the convo and they wont sell them. I preffer to tie my own anyway cos i like to make them my own length.
  20. Wear a Buff. ok it wont keep you really warm but every little helps and you can wear it loads of different weird ways.
  21. A big thanks to all the sponsors especially timber wolf. and a bigger thanks to Steve for organising the raffle. well done to all the other winners. and well done to everyone for all the money raised for the charity.
  22. waaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg i won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i cant beleive it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! steve you are awesome for setting this up! the raffle i mean not setting it up like that
  23. i was told yesturday that it is called a cushion cut because they used to actually put a cushion in it. where you would put your bar or wedge you would put in a little deflated cushion. then it attached to the saw exhaust and then you would rev the saw to pump up the cushion pushing the tree over. dont know if any of you guy have ever seen this i was just told it.

    felling wedges

cheers for your replies guys. i think the problem is us young college lads and one lady cant yet swing a sledge hammer as well as you experienced lot. and probably the fact that they arent ours so we don't really care how smashed up they get, but we should as we only make it worse for our selves in the long run.
  25. what are the best felling wedges to use? at college we use the stihl high lift wedges which i think are cr@p we have used them for 2 days work and there all knackered only be used for about 15 trees tops but the ends are all spit and broken some even completely broken off. don't seem good value for money if you ask me.
