  1. i was at a local arb shop the other day and they must of had 3 felling bars returned all snapped. all broke off where the flat plate on the end is joined to the bar. but then anything big and heavy you would use wedges.
  2. cushion cuts- this is the same as a split level cut. you put your gob in as normal then take out a quarter at the normal hight of your back cut. and put your felling bar in there. then you take out the other quarter cutting at an angle to cut under your felling bar but still above the bottom of your hinge. this basically creates a step cut for you to break using the felling bar. its used to fell trees against the lean, but only on small trees and you would use it on anything leaning to much . i was shown this at college and had to do it on my nptc assesment.
  3. nearly everyone at collage climbs in these all the teachers as well. i personally hate it but everyone else seems to love it.
  4. is that the same weekend as the Capel Manor celebration of trees fair?

    New Haix boots

thats ok steve apology accepted. i think you have to take them out to wear spikes with them but then i dont no if there is something else in there place to stop them getting clogged up. Jay
  12. Check out these new boots they look pretty nice. Wish i hadn't just bought a new pair. not sure if those spikes will be helpful or just a annoying. look nice thought. https://www.gustharts.com/UserFiles/Image/Predator.jpg https://www.gustharts.com/UserFiles/Image/PredatorSole.jpg https://www.gustharts.com/UserFiles/Image/Predator3.jpg Jay
  13. Im looking to try some new friction hitches out. I have been using a prussik until now but want to try some new stuff. I have been playing around with a VT and I like that but Im seem to have trouble tying it and getting the ends the right lengths and im not sure what length to start with. It also seems to get quite tight. Its 9mm cord on 13mm rope, im not sure if im tying it wrong. I have also been looking at a Knut and others to try out. Anyone got any tips or ideas. cheers Jay
  14. I use one like that but it already has the strap and ratchet attached to it, its from fujikura and about £350 i think. I think its well worth it but it is a struggle to put on by yourself.
  15. me 3 nice boots real comfy i just seem to find if im on the ground all day my ankles start to ache not sure if this is due to the boots or just me. but there still worth it.
  16. Im at Otley they have only been doing arb for 2 years this there second so there not that well known I don't think.
  17. Im currently at college doing a national diploma in arb, I have CS30, 31, 38 and 39 and work for a company where I climb as often as possible. However I just want to practice my climbing more as at college you don't get enough practical time. And I only work 2 days a week and may not climb. So does anyone know of an area of trees in the Bury St. Edmunds area that I can go and climb. I wont be climbing on my own for obvious safety reasons but I just want to climb and don't really want to annoy any land owners or tree owners. Cheers Jay

    do you.....

I agree its nice to be standing on pegs when nocking the top out. i prefer it much more stable if your going to be shaken around alot, much nicer.
  20. yer im at college with Craig. I think its a good idea to practise it regularly at least then you would no that if you needed to be rescued there would be someone with you that could do it and get you down safely and quickly rather than some groundie that hasn't climbed since he did his CS38 years ago and hasn't practised rescues since passing and doesnt really remember what to do.
  21. just thought id add my bit.... i recently did my cs 38 now climb trees and perform ariel rescue. on the test i only did the rescue where you just attach them to youself and guide them down using theirs and your ropes. this also had to be full role play. I then had to do the rescue where you put them on your line. this wasnt full role play and we even swapped over half way down the tree so we didnt have to keep going up and down the tree. however i was told you have to also no a 3 man pole rescue where your groundy lowers them using a figure of 8 but also how to do it without a figure of eigth using nots and a karabiner. and you also have to know a 2 man pole rescue just you and the casualty basically put a false crotch in and then the same as before putting them on your line. Even if you dont have to actually do the rescue you still have to tell the assesor how you would do it and show them the nots and stuff.
