  1. :bawling: yep landys are great for dragging things round, just double check that lengths of rope havent accidentally wrapped round your A-bar and spot lights
  2. if there is a lot of oak to saw a chainsaw mill will be slow work, a mkIII alaskan will cost around £180 then about £35 for a ripping chain for a 36" bar http://www.alaskanmill.co.uk/products.html they are slow to use and cause a lot of wastage compared to a band saw, but really come into their own in confined site where the only other option would be cutting the timber into rounds for logs. (oh and use quite a lot of fuel, my 372 uses about a tank every 14ft) dont know if anyone else has had this but make sure your bar nuts are tight every refill as i have lost 2 (not at the same time ) through the vibrations. try and get/beg/borrow/steal a metal detector! as nails arent funny. regarding making the first cut i just ratchet strap a ladder to the log see below video [ame= ] [/ame] ok he doesnt use the ratchets by i do and just remove them when the saw gets close and replace once its passed Charlie
  3. still doesnt come close to cheytacs weaponary, the 338edge and lapua are different cases much like the 6mm ppc and benchrest variants www.cheytac.com [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvvuxhD3z5E]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvvuxhD3z5E[/ame] think this vid has been posted before on here
  4. its a 338 edge, its a wildcat sniper round used for extreme ranges see below info: the .338 Edge is a 300 Remington Ultra case necked up to .338, which allows for a little more case capacity than the standard .338 Ultra. basically its a 1000yrd sniper round, not the sort of thing you pick up at your local gun shop. also agree with the other sentiments that its not appropriate to be shooting live game at that distance, one breath of wind could have caused that animal to be hit in the Jaw and it would have starved to death, also if wounded a quick follow up would have been impractical, i find with stalking its the closer you can get to the animal not the further away thats the challenge!
  5. i like my huskys, but i think if these are the two you have a choice on then go for the stihl, although it will be quite a bit more weight to carry around, that husky would be be on the limit with an 18" bar, where as the stihl will deal with it ok
  6. whats fair sized ash and oak? and welcome!
  7. compression test time I think, sounds like you have done everything else.
  8. does it take quite a few pulls before it starts? I would have the exhaust off it and see if the pistons scored,
  9. are you trying to comparing full skip chisel to a full compliment ripping chain or a skip ripping chain? if so the same amount of cutting teeth will cut a cleaner faster cut with the ripping chain, (sorry if that makes absolutly no sense! ) I have to say i doubt with a 090 on it will probably make little difference due to the amount of torque, if it was on you 066 the the skip would be the way to go, i have recently gone from skip to full comp on my 084 and it really doesnt seem to give it chance to clear the chips quick enough even on a 36" bar.
  10. MTs may come sooner rather than later, my BFG ATs let me down again today driving to my log pile (honest it was the tyres and not me)! at least i just unloaded the trailer and moved on again, and it didnt involve a tractor recovery!
  11. its not to bad if you add extra on your tariff in advance, and just stick to email and websites with very few pics. start looking at lots of pics and it gets very pricey. and yep it is a pda smart phone and its great, sat nav, diary, phone, contacts inc emails, camera, all on me all the time
  12. Im writting this on an orange spv M2000. its great, touch screen, slid out keyboard, wifi so i can nip on internet quickly at home and do email, or use gprs data transfer away from home. this phone has now been upgraded to the htc tytnII which also has built in gps, and really for the money craps on the i phone! out of all the phones i have ever owned (even the really old brick nokias) this phone is the best lasting ive had, bouncing round in trucks, tractor footwells, in my pocket while sawing. its now 2.5yrs old and i have no intention of changing it dispite being able to upgrade free. oh and i also have an otter box for it that mounts to my atv handle bars for doing parallel spreading of seed and fert with a blue tooth gps. Charlie
  13. one of our shetlands injured his leg tearing around a paddock a year back now, we had to have his back leg in a sling immobile for 4 weeks! can you imagine how much fun that was trying to strap his leg up! so i can appreciate how it feels. Im sure it will be fine Charlie
  14. just poped out to do a twenty min job clearing some timber from earlier in the week, took 2hrs as i managed to get my 130 stuck! thinking that i might need to upgrade to mud terrains when these tyres need replacing (but they are only 5months old!) moral of the story never under estimate wet grass, i feel in many cases that mud terrains would actually do less damage to the ground, as my all terrains have smeared the mud up really badly, where as MT's would just drive through it. anyway guys enjoy your landy's
  15. PM on its way
  16. back away and leave the tree unless its a major hazard to a property or people. There is a good chance the owl will already be sitting on eggs as they nest early. If the tree needs to be felled ASAP then i would seek advice from the local Natural England office, about getting dispensation to carry out the work as its NE who enforce wildlife and countryside act legislation.
  17. got to go to cumbria that weekend not happy! oh well at least APF is only 20mins away from here, hope to meet some of you there.
  18. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAN-VAULT-4-SITE-SECURITY-SAFE-TOOLBOX_W0QQitemZ230237715475QQihZ013QQcategoryZ112601QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem van vault 4 sites are pretty good, this is what i want to get for mine, will just take the bars off, i know its a pain but it means you re tighten everything before starting it in the morning!
  19. Cleaning out the birdbox camera, this was our first play on a SRT set up, using a blakes and pantin, one of my mates had left his rope installed in the tree for me to practise on, although its an 11mm and i found it a bit narrow, but its good to just go and practise techniques. the pantin took some getting used to, which i think wasnt helped by the fact that the rope was quite bouncy! thats me in the 1st pic and the wife in the other two, she does lots of bat surveys on houses so i think shes keen to do tree surveys for bats ($$$). We are staying within ladder distance of the ground as well just so things cant go wrong, looking forward to getting a bit more practise in. Is there a quick was of detaching the pantin without having to lift your leg right up? i thought you should be able to just tilt and lift your leg and the rope should detach? (please any critical comments will be appreciated as we are still learning, but nothing to harsh!)
  20. hmmm, could have a electronic combination lock installed into it, so it will only open when you enter the right combination! that would stop all this arguments over screw gates!
  21. on my 300tdi I have an alisport intercooler, uprated fuel pump, decent air filter (k&n), and mine smokes my old mans td5 disco (literally i cant see him in the cloud of smoke! ) but seriously its quick for a 130 and even given the black smoke on hard acceleration it passed its emmisions with flying colours. recon i get 25-27mpg normally down to about 19-20 on motorways, recon its cheaper to just sit behind the lorries at 60 rather than try and thrash along at 70+ as i have a truckman top that sticks up above the cab and a roof rack both of which are going to reduce the fuel as are the big BFG all terrains but if its the vehicle you need, then not a lot else comes that close
  22. mine arrived to day, makes you realise how things were done when they used horses and cross cut saws for big timber! some great pics! (although no doubt some on here can remember that anyway!) cheers for the link
  23. i am soooo not going to ask my other half to borrow one! (or steal one!) i need it in my first aid kit just in case dear, i can imagine the response to that one!
  24. I have 2day immediate tempory care certificate (done when i worked for the national park) its the same as the first 2days training for paramedics apparently, basic resus, positioning of body, how to inform people on the other end of the phone that the casulty is a goner without freaking out everyone else around you that kind of thing! I carry a personal first aid kit with two big wound dressings a few plasters and a resus mask, which in all fairness if i needed resus i would rather the person get on with it rather than faf round in my pockets for a peice of plastic to stick over my face, I also keep a couple of spare large wound dressings in a box in my truck
  25. had a thin covering at about 6 but it had all melted by 8, no fun!
