  1. Chris was there any mitigation for the known Noctule bat roost? or did you have to complete the work whilst the roost was empty, if it wasnt empty how did you deal with the bats?
  2. mate im sorry to hear about that, was it just the quad they took?
  3. yep lots of habitat potential, there is a daubentons roost just upstream of these trees and the main concearn is that we will be removing a key feeding corridor, but i think in this case safety has to come first. Also we are getting several daubies caught on fly fishing flies getting snagged in the trees so are going to remove some of the lower branches anyway. The trees them self have little roost potential as there are virtually no cavities or cracks in the trees currently. chasing the LA at the moment to get this sorted
  4. YHA powerboat level 2 is apprently the required level of competency required to use a rib for work with a passanger, its ribs i will be using not a 600hp powerboat (i think the course name is a little misleading, sorry) i will be using for work, (and looking to get one of my own) a 3m rib with a c.10hp outboard so i can sneak into the corners of the res's and lakes easily, sorry i should have clairified that  cheers for saying its not rocket science makes me feel a bit more at ease, could have done with a bit more info relating to what is/isnt covered but being im not paying for it i wont complain
  5. Just wondering if anyone out there in arb land does any powerboating? I am taking my RYA level 2 powerboat course next week and quite frankly having received the course info am bricking it . Work are putting me through it so i can use the powerboats round reserviors and lakes for doing survey work. I have no previous experience of boating at all! theres a days training and a days assement, also im not sure what happened to the level 1 course, obviously to basic for a complete novice. any words of encouragement greatly appreciated PS slightly concearned in the training manual it shows you the light sequences for all the diffent types of ship, not sure im going to find many minesweepers on reseviors in the midlands!
  6. this is the thing, i personally think its the fishing clubs problem, but they own just the rights and it has been handed down for the last 5 generations. they only fish off the other bank due to the restricted access on the road side. Im going to do the clear up of the trees that have fallen, for the fishing club, as they feel its damaging a wier. But i feel very guilty about not getting something sorted about the others. Also serveral of the local landowners have started asking whats killing all the mature willows along there, they have no signs of fungi or decay and the barks just dropped off them!
  7. er nope, as im ex N park staff and have had the land ownership GIS checked, its one of those no-mans land areas really, think the LA are going to have to deal with as its just to bigger risk to ignore given the location

make sure it oils ok, i have the farms 170 and 180 in bits so often as the oiler stops working (although that could be due to crud getting in the oil tank, farmers what can you do!), they seem like pretty robust little saws otherwise. Recon Steves price is spot on on if its as good as you say.
  10. ok cheers for that, will ring them first thing tomorrow and try and get someone out to look at them ASAP. (LA not local rag) the river is a county boundary, mid point is boundary of a SAC, entire river is SSSI its in a national park there are about 2million visitors locally annually. It beggers beleif that this hasnt been delt with earlier.
  11. its not main river so EA have no remit, all they have been able to do is tell us landowners who we already knew anyway. should we just drop them and feel good about doing a good dead and not worry about payment? as thats they stage its getting to. it panics me know that they are they especially as this is a very very high visitor area
  12. trouble is he is just that, owner of the fishing rights not the riverbed or adjoining land in legal terms! path and road would be LA owned but they are denying the trees are anything to do with them, as currently theres lots of bickering about whos paying for the two in the river to be removed. my view is sod the two in the river, their safe. Get the rest down before they drop over a public right of way!
  13. I have a situation im dealing with at the moment, where a row of willows have died along a river bank, they are all about 40ft tall and been dead a while (about 20trees total). now the issue is these trees sit between a drystone wall and the river bank. The owner of the fishing rights say their not his, the LA say there not theirs, the two adjoining landowners say there not theirs, so the question is whos are they, the reason this is an issue is the other side of the drystone wall is a footpath and road! so far no one has done anything about them but three of the trees have a pronounced lean over the road and its only a matter of time before one drops (two have recently dropped into the river luckily) I have attached two pics that hopefully explain it better, the road and path is behind the wall, i must stress these pics dont show the more dangerous trees over the path or should i pay for a land registery query (which could come back blank due to the small area)
  14. thats just greedy, and we like it
  15. my old man had one for about 18months before he swapped it for a disco (cheaper to run!) the rodeo was a nice vehicle quite roomy and had a decent amount of space in the back end, but it seemed to be a PITA to get serviced and parts for them? dont know if this has been resolved now!
  16. Heres my 130 twincab, not sure i use the roof rack enough to merit keeping it, given what fuel prices are doing currently so it may have to come off, the back is all plylined internally which doesnt help with the weight, but it does have an uprated alusport intercooler, K&N filters (theres still a bit of boy racer in me!) and an uprated fuel pump (which im also not sure is helping the fuel economy) oh and the 1/2million candle power spots on the front so i can really upset people who dont dip their headlights! only downside is the height i cant get through height barriers with less than 8ft2inches! (safely)
  17. jus' mowing the lawn  well topping some Juncus (ps if anyones after some cylinder mowers to do up were having a clearout and need to rehome about 6 mowers)
  18. I think your only option for what your saying you do would be 3/8s pitch on a 0.058 gauge as you should be able to get bars for youre bigger stihl and it will be ok on most the huskys as well, oregon also produce a ripping chain in this spec so you are cover for milling. i dont think swapping bars will work as to my knowledge there are none that take the same fittings. But you will make a saving on chain if you make lots of loops up hope this is of some use, Charlie
  19. most dealers will right a saw of that age off if it needs a new piston and cylinder, they arent super hard to change if you have a basic knowledge of engines, see if they will do what you suggest and sell you the saw back very cheap and do the replacement yourself will PM you some info if you want to do the repair youself like suppliers of cheap genuine parts and IPLs etc
  20. thats the site that made me think it was P. squamosus. some of the other websites have really naff pictures and i supposed the fungi can vary quite drastically. i assume the tree has become susceptable to this due to the roots being submerged and partially washed out? as is evident in the 1st pic there isnt a great deal left under the main trunk, I suspect this may be a candidate for large woody debris in the river.
  21. that bench they made up and had at the top table at their daughters wedding last summer, its great really comfortable It would be nice to get the time to make things that are practical, i suppose i should make more time to do things like that as the table wouldnt take a lot of making really and when it gets messy you just sand it down again and re oil it
  22. Steve that bench is really nice, the shapes are so smooth, I guess there was quite a bit of sanding or could you get that fluid shape with the saw? http://www.erratics.co.uk/index.html This is one of our friends companies, there is good money in it if you market it correctly. they have a huge belt sander but no mill yet, trying to convince them a CSM would be ok for what they want, and given the huge sander available it doesnt have to be to fine finish. here is their breakfast table (im going to make on like this with some of my timber i have milled) also the seats are pretty comfortable
  23. Is it Polyporus squamosus? (dryads saddle) its amazing how useless the internet is when it comes to things like ID guides, I think i may have to buy a decent guide, also when we have a confirmed id i will get the thread renamed so there arent so many threads called "whats the fungi",
  24. I have come across this today on my travels, its really impressive about 18" across at the widest part just interested to know what it is really, it caught my eye from quite a distance away, the tree is right on the river bank cheers Charlie
  25. recon if fuel hits £1.75 im going to by a cheap road legal atv for tearing around on and just use the defender when really required, i darent work out the running costs, put another £87 in yesterday
