  1. do they work? i have only ever heard generally negative reviews about them? i use a standard steel wedge when required and had always wondered about the effectiveness of the wood grenades, are they worth the premium in cost over a standard wedge
  2. did you order the axe sharpner as well? its a handy bit of kit for the axes and knifes as well, couple of draws through once a week keeps them razor sharp!
  3. http://www2.westfalia.net/shops/new_products_and_innovations/tested_products/products_with_test_results_/gardening/52640-plastic_insulation_tape.htm £41
  4. stunning pics nick, what camera you using? its obviously better than my £20 hp one
  5. This is poppy, had her about a month now shes 6months old and a real character shes a border cross something as you can see she has taken to fetching logs out the log basket and chewing on them, at least shes keeping me company and amuzed while im stuffed up with flu
  6. this is my axe, there are many like it but this one is mine It has split several tonnes of logs over the last 2 years, and shows no signs of problems (other than the slight run in with some concrete on the top corner) it does feel slightly head heavy but i find this works well, i split inside in an old garage with a roof of about 8ft so i cant swing overhead but i find i dont need to as the axe splits well enough, i also use this for splitting all my kindling as it has a razor sharp edge.
  7. yes i did it for about the last four years but not this year, i was busy and i also sorted them with their own high accuracy gps unit so they can do it themselves now, which kind of renders me out of that job as it payed quie nicely but travelling down from staffs in the middle of summer was getting a bit awkward
  8. yep it was
  9. you need to be carefully on ebay, I bought a right scrappy yellow mccolloch top handle the other year from a shifty looking builder in cambs it was a right dog, but i knew that when i bought it and bid accordingly got it running within ten mins of getting home and flogged it for nearly double what i payed, which was a bonus basically with ebay you need to know what your doing if bidding unseen bid as if it may be a dog, it helps if you do your own service and can do the work yourself to keep costs down
  10. port the exhuast, then put a 17" stihl es bar, and put a 8pin sprocket on it with a .404 full chisel chain and bobs your uncle ok its not practical really but its bloody good fun, and very quick for ringing up smaller heavy stuff like oak, plus it has the ability to make people very scared by the shear amount of noise Oh and i find 36" seems about right on the 084 anything else seems to big and wieldy (nose heavy)
  11. more importantly can you get it down again or are all those shiney saws on view?
  12. John, i really hope everything is ok, my sister in law has been rough with this, to the point she ended up with blood in the sick, but she has been put on strong antibiotics and seems to be on the mend. aside from this point does anyone else carry alcohol jelly handwash with them? i do its designed for water free handwashing, smells like cheap vodka when used, i use it before i stop for a brew or lunch. Its the stuff you get in hospital i think for preventing MRSA
  13. what sort of discount then can we get then?
  14. and if you're putting an order in westfalia stick these on your order Fiskars Super Splitting Axe 72cm Item number 631218 £42 (awesome design) Fiskars Universal Axe 44.5 cm Item number 484766 £24 (faster for limbing small stuff than a chainsaw very sharp, can shave with it!) Fiskars Axe Sharpener Item number 605295 £8.50 (quick and puts a good edge on) westfalia sell a lot of tat but these axes are fantastic (better than gransfors IMHO ) also a useful backup if your processors plying up right sorry for the thread hi-jack
  15. i know in cambridgeshire the council wanted to create a load more woodland and they wanted to try and link up the existing native woodland, but when questioned in more detail they didnt want to pay anymore towards the woods either management or creation, I dont think the woods round cambridgeshire really are going to provide huge amounts of valuable biofuels, especially by just bring the un-managed woods into management, they need to really think this through and put funding into woodland creation
  16. apparently once married yes it is!
  17. oh, i'll hold off on the stetson then! and not related as far as im aware
  18. just been and had a look at the new ms171 and 181 at the local dealers this morning, i would imgine they are great if you want to build your muscles up! seem like very heavy saws for the size, but im assured that they are a lot more torquey than their predecessors, will see how they go when the let me have one to try, dont think it will be replacing the 340husky though!
  19. best find a stetson i suppose
  20. I saw all the threads earlier in the season about this, i currently have about 4-5tonnes of seasoned sycamore sat in the yard, not selling any before start of december! hopefully by which time people will have become desperate and will pay silly money and i will become rich, ha ha ha.
  21. shifting away from the top handles, i love my 372xp husky it just seems a great all round saw its not to heavy, i prefer this to my 254xp even in smaller stuff it just handles nicely, even with a 24" bar on it, and the vibration is noticably less for the smaller stuff I have a husky 340e and its really fast for just chopping logs and brash, very light with a 12" bar and handles very well, I have used the smaller stihls such as ms170 and 180s and i dont like them they just seem bulky compared to using the huskys but this may well be a personal thing as my father in law (owner of said stihls) prefers them to my huskys (which suits me fine!)
  22. which ever one feels comfortable, which is probably the most important factor if you will use it a lot, but get the biggest one you can afford and practically need (dont race out and by an 880!)
  23. Im on-board, up near uttoxeter!
  24. Hi Will,

where abouts are you based? those carvings are great do you have a stand at uttoxeter farmers market? or possibly you might be able to sell them at denston farm shop? im guessing doveleys wouldnt be interested.

anyway I guess i cant be to far from you as im up near Hollington so about 6miles from Uttoxeter

    Regards

  25. Hi David, I use my alaskan occasionally more for my own use when there is a decent piece of timber in a tight location where i cant get the ATV or landy to extract it, I use the timber my self generally rustic garden furniture tables etc. I do enjoy using it but its quite thirsty on fuel and slow but if you have the time and some nice timber, its a cheap way of utilising it rather than logging it all. I maybe use it half a dozen times a year, when i have a job im not in a rush with (so mostly on the in-laws farm)

I do use mine on my husky 372xp even though i have a big stihl, as i find the time difference isnt to bad and the fuel saving is quite a lot about 33% less with the husky for the same amount of timber.

    regards
