  1. why doesnt it suprise me its his beavers that escape as he is the main driving force behind uk reintroductions, and is struggling to find release sites!
  2. http://www.claymorepaintball.com/shop/products.asp?hdnCtrlPageNum=1&item0=134&manukey0=-1&deptkey0=-1&srch0=&sort0=7&slct0=&ipp0=12&selmanukey0=-1&seldeptkey0=-1&srch0top=Shop+Search&selsort0=7&CtrlPageJump=1 hmm, above posts give me an idea, combine the above with anti vandal paint and rocksalt! should give them something to think about
  3. as someone who does ag contracting as well don't take nix as gospal, else you will be bust quickly, use it as a very loose guide. His workings are normally ok for south east uk but generaly are up to 20% out on what you can actually get in the midlands, also the older versions wernt very helpful for woodland info, just quoted prices for uk grant schemes, and rental for sporting interests. just my opinion
  4. got a copy of Oliver Rackhams woodlands book, a new shaver (someones trying to tell me something), socks, congratulations Tommy, i found asking my father in law for his permission to be the single most scary thing i have ever done! the terrier and I just waiting for the wife to get home from work, then start on round two of presents (although the terrier might not last that long the christmas doggy buscuits seem to be having some adverse effects)
  5. yes but they got a bit twichy when she asked about had anyone every fallen out of a tree, also regarding the lack of air ambulance support, surely you would check that before setting of for a two hour drive into the forest or wait there all day, i know you wont earn anything unless you can get cutting, but having done heli-lifting i know how you can sit on site for two hours then suddenly the pilot decides its ok to fly, frustrating but thats how it goes, surely you would sit it out?
  6. just finished watching it on the on demand sevice, great programme, enjoyed watching it, better than cringing at axemen,
  7. what model deere? 4955?
  8. must admit, i generally make sure my co-worker is watching me work, not chainsawing, or on the phone, or more than a few yards away, they must be as close as is safe and watching carefully, there are so many additional safety factors to consider, if a branch moves on the ground you can see it, if its underwater its very tricky to see whats going on, this is where the second pair of eyes higher on the bank can be of benefit, Matt did you have to do drysuit training? as i know several places that wont sell them to the public
  9. to risky, its likely to get snagged there is also the potential if you get carried downstream to get pulled under repeatedly, i would rather just wear a self-inflating life jacket and have a thrown line on site, admittedly in very deep wide channels a tag line could be justified but then again its likely the water will be to deep and also if its that bigger river just use a ridged boat,
  10. lines attached to the person in the water are a no no, but there should be a throw line present, agreed, also what type of waders? mine are neoprene due to a closer fit and they increase bouyancy so you will still float if filled with water, rubber waders will make you sink if you fill them. other thing is chainsaw on a lanyard, so you can either sling it over your shoulder if you ned both hands, or if heaven forbid you drop it retrieval is easier, our risk assessments for this type of work is crazy, and I assume your all carrying leptosporosis warning cards in your wallets if your in/near rivers? one of mates at the EA got it, not very nice!
  11. i used to go in the rivers up here, which are supposed to be really clean eg river Dove and Manifold in shorts and sandles during summer, i will not go in without either wellies or waders anymore, it frightens me when i see people swimming in these lovely rivers, because ive been to the top of the trent system and seen the rubbish that goes in in the top few miles is enough to put me off!
  12. just out of interest, how come it had to be logged up and couldnt just be cut near the next stem and left for habitat?
  13. You've all seen the lions hiding in the grass waiting for a meal, well heres the border terrier in the cotton grass, and then casting her eye over some fantastic upland oak/birch woodland
  14. if it requires chest waders the chances of cutting your leg is slim, (unless you have a big bar on) I do quite a bit of in river work and either put up with the heat, or have it written down my im not wearing ppe trousers. I do however wear my ppe jacket as the chance of sliiping forward or tripping and instinctively lift the saw up in the air presnt increased upper body risks imho.
  15. the species mix would hint to me that the site is potentially quite damp, i also notice the channel in the first photo is quite full, im guessing removing a very small amount from selected areas its going to be most beneficial, there is a chance that removing a lot of the trees could raise the water table, so i would identify sites that are on either higher or drier parts of the wood to work in as these will generate a better ground flora rather than just ending up with more willow/alder regen, also those close to the track if you only have a wheel barrow, does your farmer friend not have an atv you could scrounge for a day?
  16. what purpose does the wood serve, or is it completely un-utilised, do you have an interest in nature conservation or financial requirement for the woodland, you will get a load of diffent answers, is that photo typical of the whole site, are there protected species present, what has been the historical management, whats the site like, dry and good access, boggy and difficult to get round? its quite a tricky one to advise on and ultimately only you know what you want to achieve with the site....... go on give us a clue
  17. http://vid114.photobucket.com/albums/n251/MattyF_bucket/lime003.flv see if this works

    call out

i think my phone would be flat between the hours of 8pm and 8am
  19. where abouts in the country, and whats access like?
  20. new tractor! cant be bad, what is the tractor?
  21. just been on the woodfuels east website to see how things were progressing, seems that some of the links eg on harvesting proposals have been pulled off already, it claims there is no wildwood in eastern counties therefore there are no issues with managing the woodlands and that 200,000tonnes of timber is wasted each year by woods not being managed, im sure the species that rely on dead wood dont think its wasted, anyway sorry to be cynical but it looks like most FC partnerships/project, jobs for the boys and i cant see where it really brings any benefits, as i bet the people selected for carry out "harvesting" (when we find out what their harvesting stratergy is) will be big companies already involved in woodfuels already (like the ones on the steering group ) and i would be really keen to see what happens to the timber value, will it be like straw for Ely powerstation, its viable to start with as its a low cost waste product, but as more people get involved in the market, landowners become aware of the need to fill contracts and start putting prices up until it hits a point where its no longer economically viable. I dont see this as of any benefit to the woods really, it may generate some income but in fairness the big blocks of woodland are managed, so its only the smaller ones, it might help to meet the governments sustainability targets but i think thats all it is, a tick box excercise, set up partnership project, reduce non-renewable co2, pat selves on back. Or am i being to cynical
  22. scarey thing is that polaris in the vid is about £11.5k to buy over here with the tracks! expensive toys
  23. thats what im talking about so the quadski cost more than a quad and a jetski would and doesnt seem to be as good as either, not much ground clearance, looks like a compromise on both fronts, although if you have $40k to blow why the hell not not sure i would be parting with body parts though
  24. not at work due to having a crappy flu bug since last week, though i was over it at the weekend, till yesterday when i started sniffing and got a raging headache on neurofen and benylin today and so far have made it from the bedroom to the lounge and plan on going nowhere else, keep coughing that hard im worried about loosing a lung at least i can get the christmas cards written, and look at pictures of shiney kit on the internet, i swear my expenses go up ten fold when im ill, question is do i really need a tracked quad bike? hmmmm
  25. how much wood is it needs hauling?
