  1. the above head felling is where having a full wrap handles comes into its own
  2. logbaron where you based in staffs?
  3. its when the operators skimp on servicing that combines catch fire, i worked on one place that one operator had the combine caught fire 6times in one harvest, each time it was caught quickly and ended in no more than discoloured paint, also more john deeres break down as more have been sold they have the biggest market share! i love my deeres driven loads over the years but in the last 6years they havent got better in fact quite the opposite, I have mates from uni that work in product support for JD, New Holland, Case, and AGCO and i know which are the busiest and it aint the deere guys (FTR i currently drive a MF)
  4. why? probably cos its out of warrenty it will be the in built timer that means all faults occur 1 week after this expires
  5. my clearing saw did this the other day over lunchtime, working fine then wouldnt restart, it had a broken HT lead! if you have a stihl tach you could put in next to the coil to see if its giving a pulse when you pull it over, im supprised its the coil on such a new machine

  11. i have a 346xpg its a great saw and it keeps your hands toasty warm
  12. eucalyptus regans now thats a fast growing tree, saw some pics at a FC event of one at 9yrs old and it was 12" dbh or it may have been a hybrid i have been burning alder for the last month for my hot water and cooking on it was felled in march, a really underestimated timber, it seems to have dried really quickly as well, split within a week of felling, then left to air dry for two months and saw to logs moved inside for a month it gets really hot
  13. 200 trees i would have thought you would want to be a bit higher than that? smallest FC establishment grant i belive is 0.25ha which is 50x50m plot and that would require 275 trees (based on 1100/ha) also i dont think you will get a whole load of wood fuel from it, i think for self sufficent biomass production a domestic house set up requires about 3ha of fast growing willow/poplar species, (although if its just logs for the fire in winter then this figure may be ok, although i would still think it wants to be higher) also if you do a woodland mgmt plan (£400 grant) on the FC template as part of your application to them, you will get the felling licenses sorted and approved with no bother for a set time, this extra income from FC might mean you could charge a bit more for the work rather than just having the Landowner coughing up for the trees and mulch, it might be more appealing to them
  14. cant remember which two members were off to canada for a bit, i would try and find out send them a pm and see if they could send you one back marked up as a present
  15. i have a 340e (older version of the 440e) i wouldnt want an 18" bar on that saw, i run a 12" on mine, 15 would be fine but 18 would be to much in my opinion, they are a nice light saw to use though, dont forget as well you can cut a 2ft log with a 12" bar, a lot of my friends who have had saws for cutting firewood, seem to try to insist on 18-20" bars for cutting firewood which is mostly 12-15" diameter, I agree with Khriss as well, keeping it sharp is the key
  16. im sorry is this the same Mr Lofthouse, that not a month ago was campaigning to get people to stop using latin names in favour of common names? what happened?

  19. second vote for Mister Solutions, very reasonable for genuine parts as well,
  20. er? 14th sept is a monday? 14th of August is a Friday
  21. when i used to do ag work in cambridgeshire and there was a chance we would be needed over the weekend or evenings, we were expected to be on site within 2hrs and got paid a retainer to be on stand-by it was something like £10-£15 per day which was only paid if we were on standby and didnt get called in, if we were called in then we just went onto the overtime rate per hour, much the same as the guys that do the snow plowing, if there is a chance of bad weather they get a retainer, but this contract expects people to be on stand-by 365days a year with two sober staff, fully insured staff and qualified with no retainer and only £200 authorised work, what happens if its 3am you get a situation where you need a crane or (humour me skyhuck) a MEWP and you cant get hold of the person that authorises the work? you just sit there waiting until 7am when they get up and turn their mobile on?
  22. you just have to emphasise the use of local sustainable timber, and the social benefits of your work to the local communities, eg if you deal with specific foresters for sourcing timber, mention that you put work their way rather than bringing in timber from miles away its that kind of thing that scores good points with them, i wouldnt get to bogged down in the EU document, but just remember about sustainable use, social inclusion, and business diversification, if you can match all three together whilst talking about your business your onto a winner
  23. Guide to European Funding 2007-2013 European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) programme available through the new Rural DevelopmentProgramme for England (RDPE) Cornwall will get an allocation of "reserved" funding from the new Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) to support rural development activities for 2007-2013. Rural Development: For 2007-2013 Rural Development falls under European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) but only through the new Rural Development Programme for England. Cornwall has "reserved" funding under this programme to support its rural development activities. The new programmes will be based around four "priority-axes", with Member States able to choose from a menu of around 37 measures: Axis 1 - Farming/Forestry Competitiveness Axis 2 - Environmental Land Management (agri-environment measures) Axis 3 - Quality of life and diversification in rural areas Axis 4 - Leaderprogramme assisting rural communities to improve quality of life and economic prosperity (cross-cutting) The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is planning to run Axis 2 at a national level in England, managed by Natural England. Axis 1, 3 and 4 (Leader) are expected to be managed regionally by the Regional Development Agencies. ALSO Enterprise and Industry Grants' Work Programme Description: Financial support is available to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) wishing to grow and develop their businesses in a way that is compatible with the overall EU goal of sustainable development. Funding body:European Commission Max. Value:£ 53,300Application deadline:04/09/2009 i cant find who the application need to be made for reguarding this in Cornwall, i will have a bit more of a hunt about whilst these are pretty main stream funding sources, it would be worth trying to get more info on the second one, as you might find you can get a grant of say 30-50% of equipment to produce local timber for sustainable building projects, it might be worth looking into offering your sevices to a local conservation group for a bit, ie community woodlands, wildlife trust, as this will look good on any applications and covers you for social involvement, if you want any more info reguarding applications drop me a pm Charlie

i run a 372 on a 24" bar and it runs soooo sweetly is amazing, great saw,
  25. sod NFU, theiving whatsits, give adrian flux a ring, they do my 130 twincab for about 2/3s what NFU wanted, i have also been stung by NFU after a car claim in the past, they told me i would loose 2yrs no claims when i had an accident, then scrapped it all and put my insurance up to £1100 per year! on a 1.4 peugeot their business insurance is different but the car policies are by a third party insurer and they arent competitive, IMHO
