  1. which is the most viable option for funding this work? NE HLS special project on ASNW or EWGS WIG for biodiversity? i have the option of putting a site into one or the other schemes as both will be present on the land and wondered if people have used either scheme, i am aware the NE funding would be what they consider 100% and FC would be 80% contributions but i have a feeling FC's 80% is higher than NE's 100% funding, it certainly is for thinning ops any help much appreciated, also what do rhodie logs burn like?
  2. not sure what goes in the newer ones as i havent had one of my newer huskies to bits but the older ones, had a small filter that pushed in there, that looked like the head of a cotton wool bud. I would also be tempted to replace the fuel line whilst you have it in pieces incase its has perished where it comes out the tank and that could also lead to air leaks, its a cheap part and worth doing if you tidying the whole thing up, also check the impulse hose as well, order these two and the tank vent assembly from your dealer they shouldnt be more than £20 and it will eliminate that from your problem list,
  3. Im guessing that as its a 394 its not new new?
  4. I think the hole you discribe may be the tank breather, to let air in so it doesn't create a vacum in the tank when running, have you tried running it since you stripped the carb down as from your post it doesn't sound like you have?
  5. which park of the high peak? both the sycamore and ash will be good firewood, it depends how much firewood you require if you will be self sufficent, I used to work in Edale, and may have to pop to Hope next week, i can also point you in the direction of some funding streams currently in operation if your inside the national park, which may be applicable to your woodland
  6. buy Ben Laws book on sustainable woodland management, its probably the best all in one easy to read book on the subject of woodland management i have come across, also the woodland management planning course run by the green wood center in Ironbridge are great, also if you join the small woods association you get a pack with loads useful info in it where are you based?
  7. overtime?? so dont miss working for L/A's
  8. I have recently had a similar issue, basically it depends if your happy that the la will take the wrap if someone swings a hedge hook badly and hits themselves, or will they try and say you cant of taught them the correct method, I decided i would want the cover rather than being on someone elses
  9. i had a geoxt with all whistles and bells, kept breaking, then 2 weeks after the end of warrenty it packed up entirely trimble wouldnt do anything about it, despite us have to drive it back to liverpool on 4 seperate occasions, ended up giving the unit to magellan to pull apart so they could see if they could get any useful info from it!
  10. I use digiterra, if you look to down this route give Dave Shandley at ormston technologies a bell, tell him Charlie Horsford put you in touch, but first have a figure of what you want to spend and haggle like hell with all of them as most will give 15-20% of rrp and shop around play them off against each other, (they love it really) Dave did a version of digiterra with layers for fountains for survey work, I have used pocketGIS, arcpad, and a couple of bits of freeware, but digiterra is the one i find easiest to use without a big manual, and also people with no gis experience seem to pick up quickly as well, as i tried about 6 different packages before deciding which one the local national park should switch to
  11. does the spec of the job allow a tractor on site, if so what about a mounted flail hedge cutter that blows the debris into a large hopper on a trailer, eg the Bomford falcon collector? http://www.bomford-turner.com/products/Arm%20Mowers/collector.htm or failing that a method we have used for harvesting heather brash, there is a contractor (cant remember his name but can get it if your interested) who has a double chop forage harvester, which blows the brash into a modified trailer, so all the debris ends up in those 1ton builders bags, once its full you just drop them off and put some more in and they can be collected or burnt at lesuire?
  12. Just bumping an old thread to see if anyone has under body protection on their atv's looking at getting some ally skid plates to protect the underside, as i know there are a few people on here using their quads for work
  13. blimey lads, that nearly £200 more than i paid for my stihl 084! there must be two people who wanted it
  14. I have used a Brenderup 3 Way Tipper for work with high mesh sides on it for hauling brash towed very well behind my defender and it takes about 30seconds to swap from rear to side tipping, the metal work was very heavy duty, i would have one over an ifor!
  15. give them a shout and see if you can get a copy SmallWoods.org.uk - Home if not its £23 a year for woodland worker membership,
  16. nice, there is an article is the current smallwoods magazine on using an old ransome for extracting timber looks a handy little bit of kit
  17. I run 24" on my 372, pulls it well if you keep the chain sharp! i would only go for 3120 if your running 36" regularly
  18. you repairing that valmet harvester i have a mate that thinks he could refurb your hydrulic pump if so
  19. for agricultural use you can still get it, we have a 205ltr drum on the in-laws farm
  20. good i hate people who do that its horrifically carcinogenic and never drys properly so you will always get covered if you ever brush against it in the future, creosote is still available, whack the posts in bath full for a week so it soaks in well, they will last for ages, when we used to have a farm the elm posts were taken out every 8 yrs and given another go through the creosote, many of these posts are still in use
  21. reason i was give on several training sessions was if you get kickback and hit your face at least you should still be able to use the whistle to get attention, this was also taught on a remote are first aid training i did, where if you wind yourself you can still blow the whistle if you cant shout for help
  22. I have one clipped to my tool pouch, always have it on me,
  23. oi carefull, mine was soft top and everything
  24. mine GV was great off road, pulled a trailer on wet grass far better than the defender does, had a lot less issues with the GV off road,
  25. i had a grand vitara gv2000 petrol swb, not the van version, bit thirsty but no more so that most 4x4s very impressed with the build quality especially how heavy duty the under side components were, never got mine stuck which is more than can be said for my defender that replaced it, I would have another, very comfortable as well if using for a lot of road work, in 3yrs only thing i did was replace the sump as it had corroded badly as was starting to weap a bit, only downside is that the load space is pretty limited
