Worked fine for me.. Some said they were good others said they were rubbish! It had a lombardini in it (which blew up) and it was a pretty staight swap to stick a replacement in it!.

We had forest tech swadlincote put a new lobardini in our 222 back in 2008, I think it was a 32 hp non turbo. It ran great, better then our TW 190 (but messier), untill it was nicked. Fitted it cost £3078.50 including the VAT. Probablly is still running great..

I gave notice to fell two crappy trees in a conservation area, council stuck a TPO on it, so I appealed. "The Town and Country Planning Act 1990 makes special provision for trees in conservation areas which are not the subject of a TPO. Under Section 211 anyone proposing to cut down or carry outworks on a tree in a conservation area is required to give the Local Planning Authority six week’s prior notice (a ‘section 211 notice’). The purpose of this requirement is to give the LPA an opportunity to consider whether a TPO should be made in respect of the tree. The LPA have now made a TPO on the trees dated 2 March 2012. The legislation under Section 211 Notices provides no right of appeal to the Secretary of State. I appreciate that you will be disappointed by the response by the response. However in light of the above we cannot accept it." Therefore I have to make another application wait another 6 -8 weeks then appeal again!

We've changed all our vehicles this year. In an attempt to stay legal. From two transits and a small 4x4 mitzy pinin. We now have a 6 ton Iveco, 130 tipper, land cruiser and 3.5ton tipping trailer. Covers most eventualities.

About 45% including what the partners take out.

That's saws, trucks, chippers, tractor, stumpgrinder the lot!

It costs more then being a partnership, as you have to file returns etc. Our accountants bill is going up by about £1000. I am no expert.. Spent some time confused by the accountant a few weeks back.. Paying dividends appears to be alot more complicated then just drawing out cash as and when. As partners we paid ourselves a "salary" each week, if you do that as a director of a LTD co you end up paying tax twice, once as corporation tax and again as income tax (if over the £8K threshold). Dividends can be paid once you have made a profit but you need to have recorded shareholder meetings! It is not cost effective to run a car through the business either, trucks and vans are fine but company cars are taxed loads! Which is a shame as we just brought a toyota land cruiser... We can just pay milage on it now instead but it's all a faff you don't have in a partnership. We should be able to save more tax then we lose however and the ltd liability although not 100% protection, still offers some.

I know most folk won't like discussing numbers but what percentage do you guys in tree surgery companies spend of different things? I'm doing my accounts: 5% on advertising 5% on fuel 5% on repairs/new saws and small equipment (two chippers, stumpgrinder, 2 trailers) 4% on insurance 2% on running our 3 trucks (6 tonner, 130 and 4x4)not including fuel and insurance

A partnership is much simpler and cheaper. We are changing from partnership to LTD, it is complicated and costly although we should save the additional costs in reduced tax. Accounts need to be filed at companies house, meeting need to recorded when dividends are paid out. etc... You do get some protection due to the ltd liablilty which means you are less likely to lose the house if it all goes pear shaped and your insurance wriggles out of covering you. Your accountant is the real winner!

I have a degree in ecology, but after graduating found that the only realistic chance of getting work in the field was to volunteer for years, or do a masters/pHD or both! Thinks have changed since I graduated and before the downturn there seemed to be more work for ecologists.

There is nothing comparable to the 130 and there is something about climbing in it and driving it. But I'm glad I got a land cruiser rather then a 90, for quoting and occasional towing!

Ours has just failed its MOT... Crack in chassis, Corroded brake pipes and a split in the side of one of the tyres!
