  1. I'm on my third pair of meindl chainsaw boots. I've stuck with the black!
  2. I have a degree in ecology, but after graduating found that the only realistic chance of getting work in the field was to volunteer for years, or do a masters/pHD or both! Thinks have changed since I graduated and before the downturn there seemed to be more work for ecologists.
  3. What do people use to search for us? What is the most popular? Tree Work Tree Surgeon Tree Surgery Hedge cutting Lopping Topping
  4. The Senior Monitoring and Enforcement Officer has decided on the following mix is most suitable. Ash - 40% Oak - 20% Field maple - 10% Hawthorn - 10% Hazel - 10% Holly - 5% Alder - 5% Cherry and/or goat willow could also be added in at a low proportion (2.5% each), at the expense of something else (e.g. in place of alder).
  5. Every Landrover thread needs pics..
  6. There is nothing comparable to the 130 and there is something about climbing in it and driving it. But I'm glad I got a land cruiser rather then a 90, for quoting and occasional towing!
  7. Ours has just failed its MOT... Crack in chassis, Corroded brake pipes and a split in the side of one of the tyres!
  8. http://www.albatrees.co.uk/downloads/wildflowers.pdf?view=674 http://www.albatrees.co.uk/plantspricelist These guys do plugs.
  9. There ain't much topsoil and it's pretty likely its not great. Can you remember what you planted? I think if we put small hardy stuff in they should be able to survive. One of my lectures at uni did lots of research using willows to reclaim mine spoil. This stuff isn't full of heavy metals so it's not all bad.
  10. I've asked for a chemical analysis, as they've chemists on site. It's built up ground but the ash is very dense, like icing sugar so drainage wise the water is going to run down through the topsoil and run down the slope. I don't think it will penetrate into the ash much, any root growth is going to be restricted to the 8 inches of top siol. They are doing it as the EA has told them to and they want to look like they have done something. They have no long term aim, the plant is to be closed in 2035. Their plan was to get root balled trees, dig a hole into the ash and fill it with top soil. This would just create undergound pots that at best would restrict the trees growth once they had out grown them but more likely just fill with water and kill the trees!
  11. A local powerstation wants me to plant on the top of an ash heap. The ash is apparently pretty inert, very fine particles not very porus and possibly high in amonia. Covered with topsoil only 8 inches deep. Any recomendations? They want instant effect, but I think the only way we are likely to get anything to establish without adding lots of top soil is to put some small whips or plugs in. They want natives. My thoughts. A mix of alder, birch, feild maple and ash.
  12. But if you have a 300 trees to do and it takes 3 months, you can't invoice untill all the works are complete..
  13. I must be doing it wrong.. I found to decend I needed to hold on to the wrench, pulling it down to the VT. I think the cord from the wrench might be to short..
  14. Tried SRT with the rope wrench today for the first time on a poplar tale down. Can't say I was blown away, yet.. Did feel a little odd, but not that different from climbing with a hitch climber, felt weird only having one line. I guess the main difference comes from using ascenders, is the pantin combo the way forward. I used a pair of acenders which I've had for about 12 years but never used... Is it only me or do others find the edges of the wrench and bolts, less than comfortable when gripping it to decend? Could someone biuld a nice smooth brushed alli device which is more tactile...
  15. Jack, are you keeping busy with the private work.. With councils there are lots of hoops to jump though and you have to be able to afford to wait before you get paid! It's normally more then three months from start of works to getting any cash, our last job started 14th of November and we were paid last week february! Unfortunately any staff and subbies are not willing to wait that long so it is a pain with cash flow.
  16. Mine hopefully arrives tomorrow, along with a rope wrench... Recent threads on Arb talk have been costly.. Reckon I might have found a use for those hundreds of golf balls I picked up!
  17. German boots are normally wider apparently. So meindl work well for me.
  18. If you haven't got 55K this could do the same job: MERCEDES 814 DA 4X4 CHASSIS CAB, YEAR1996, ONLY 84K MILES, 3.8MTR WHEEL BASE | eBay
  19. Cameleon Modular Mission Systems (M.M.S) From Ovik Solutions. £55K + VAT IVECO 4x4 DAILY 5.5 Tonne with Hydraulic Hookloader System and Several Bodies | eBay
  20. Golf balls don't stand up to chainsaws! Although our TW 250 chipper fins cracked on the job:sneaky2:
  21. Felled 42 big leylandii, must have found 1000 golf balls! Photo shows what came out of one tree!
  22. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/general-chat/24422-axes-kids.html
  23. Get a bigger chipper and they ain't so bad. Felling over 40 big buggers on a golf course. Lots of chip (and golf balls)- filled the 6.5 ton iveco twice, the 8 ton grain trailer twice and the 130 today. It's our second day and were about 2/3rds through. Got to get rid of the timber next! Anyone want 15-20tons of leylandii wood..?
  24. I have two numbers with Tamar, both forwarded to my mobile. Also have a landline diverted to it. You do get annoyed with sales calls however because you pay for the cost of the divert! So every call you get costs at least 6p.
  25. Especially with the big chipper!
