  1. We had forest tech swadlincote put a new lobardini in our 222 back in 2008, I think it was a 32 hp non turbo. It ran great, better then our TW 190 (but messier), untill it was nicked. Fitted it cost £3078.50 including the VAT. Probablly is still running great..
  2. I guess they don't want you to forget to go..
  3. Anyone going at conkers? Access to profitable woodland - make woodlands pay their... - Eventbrite
  4. I gave notice to fell two crappy trees in a conservation area, council stuck a TPO on it, so I appealed. "The Town and Country Planning Act 1990 makes special provision for trees in conservation areas which are not the subject of a TPO. Under Section 211 anyone proposing to cut down or carry outworks on a tree in a conservation area is required to give the Local Planning Authority six week’s prior notice (a ‘section 211 notice’). The purpose of this requirement is to give the LPA an opportunity to consider whether a TPO should be made in respect of the tree. The LPA have now made a TPO on the trees dated 2 March 2012. The legislation under Section 211 Notices provides no right of appeal to the Secretary of State. I appreciate that you will be disappointed by the response by the response. However in light of the above we cannot accept it." Therefore I have to make another application wait another 6 -8 weeks then appeal again!
  5. I went to look at a london plane with twin leaders and a crack that had opened up in the wind. Climbed up the one side which I thought would stay standing while waiting for some straps to strap it together. It was still quite windy and I didn't like the feel of it, came down to tell the homeowner we'd have to comeback. While talking to the homeowner we watched the side I was tied into crash into the garage!
  6. Your going to have to change your web site... "Seven years after setting up in business, Tyneside tree surgeon Chris Gill finally has the vehicle he always wanted – a new Fuso Canter. Chris Gill Tree Surgery was established in 2004 but proprietor Mr Gill worked previously for another company in the same field. "They had a Canter which I just thought was a fantastic little truck," he recalled. "When I set out on my own I tried to be very careful to control expenditure, so initially I made do with a series of used vans. But I always knew that when I was in a position to invest in a new truck, it would have to be a Canter." Mr Gill's 3.5-tonne Canter 3C15 model was supplied by Mercedes-Benz dealer Bell Truck and Van, of Longbenton, Newcastle – the German manufacturer's dealer network is also responsible for sales and support of the Fuso light truck range in the UK. Mounted on its robust, ladder-frame chassis is a bespoke, high-sided body by CVC, of Blaydon. Although Ponteland-based Chris Gill Tree Surgery serves some commercial customers, it undertakes most of its work for private customers, pruning, felling and planting trees in domestic gardens. The truck is now hard at work transporting Mr Gill and his team of two, and towing a large wheeled wood-chipper, to sites across the north-east. "The Canter is the ideal vehicle for the job, just as I knew it would be," he continued. "The turning circle is excellent, which makes manoeuvring in narrow residential streets easy, even when towing a chipper. "It also carries weight extremely well – the cab-forward design means any cargo is much more evenly distributed between the axles, whereas the vans I've used previously tend to sit very 'tail-heavy'. The flat-fronted cab also helps give a smaller overall footprint. "At 18,000 miles the service intervals are long and I expect the high-quality Japanese engineering to translate into excellent reliability, while the fact that the three-year warranty has no mileage limit demonstrates the manufacturer's faith in its product. "It's great to drive too," he added. "Even with three people in the cab, a load on the back and a chipper towed behind, there's ample power from the 150hp engine. I definitely made the right choice."
  7. Do you want a cheap accountant? You might get what you pay for?
  8. We've changed all our vehicles this year. In an attempt to stay legal. From two transits and a small 4x4 mitzy pinin. We now have a 6 ton Iveco, 130 tipper, land cruiser and 3.5ton tipping trailer. Covers most eventualities.
  9. About 45% including what the partners take out.
  10. That's saws, trucks, chippers, tractor, stumpgrinder the lot!
  11. Not sure of the size or weight, but when full is over loaded! Put a post up others will know.

  12. It costs more then being a partnership, as you have to file returns etc. Our accountants bill is going up by about £1000. I am no expert.. Spent some time confused by the accountant a few weeks back.. Paying dividends appears to be alot more complicated then just drawing out cash as and when. As partners we paid ourselves a "salary" each week, if you do that as a director of a LTD co you end up paying tax twice, once as corporation tax and again as income tax (if over the £8K threshold). Dividends can be paid once you have made a profit but you need to have recorded shareholder meetings! It is not cost effective to run a car through the business either, trucks and vans are fine but company cars are taxed loads! Which is a shame as we just brought a toyota land cruiser... We can just pay milage on it now instead but it's all a faff you don't have in a partnership. We should be able to save more tax then we lose however and the ltd liability although not 100% protection, still offers some.
  13. I know most folk won't like discussing numbers but what percentage do you guys in tree surgery companies spend of different things? I'm doing my accounts: 5% on advertising 5% on fuel 5% on repairs/new saws and small equipment (two chippers, stumpgrinder, 2 trailers) 4% on insurance 2% on running our 3 trucks (6 tonner, 130 and 4x4)not including fuel and insurance
  14. A partnership is much simpler and cheaper. We are changing from partnership to LTD, it is complicated and costly although we should save the additional costs in reduced tax. Accounts need to be filed at companies house, meeting need to recorded when dividends are paid out. etc... You do get some protection due to the ltd liablilty which means you are less likely to lose the house if it all goes pear shaped and your insurance wriggles out of covering you. Your accountant is the real winner!
  15. I love my 130 and my toyota
  16. I'm on my third pair of meindl chainsaw boots. I've stuck with the black!
  17. I have a degree in ecology, but after graduating found that the only realistic chance of getting work in the field was to volunteer for years, or do a masters/pHD or both! Thinks have changed since I graduated and before the downturn there seemed to be more work for ecologists.
  18. What do people use to search for us? What is the most popular? Tree Work Tree Surgeon Tree Surgery Hedge cutting Lopping Topping
  19. The Senior Monitoring and Enforcement Officer has decided on the following mix is most suitable. Ash - 40% Oak - 20% Field maple - 10% Hawthorn - 10% Hazel - 10% Holly - 5% Alder - 5% Cherry and/or goat willow could also be added in at a low proportion (2.5% each), at the expense of something else (e.g. in place of alder).
  20. Every Landrover thread needs pics..
  21. There is nothing comparable to the 130 and there is something about climbing in it and driving it. But I'm glad I got a land cruiser rather then a 90, for quoting and occasional towing!
  22. Ours has just failed its MOT... Crack in chassis, Corroded brake pipes and a split in the side of one of the tyres!
  23. http://www.albatrees.co.uk/downloads/wildflowers.pdf?view=674 http://www.albatrees.co.uk/plantspricelist These guys do plugs.
  24. There ain't much topsoil and it's pretty likely its not great. Can you remember what you planted? I think if we put small hardy stuff in they should be able to survive. One of my lectures at uni did lots of research using willows to reclaim mine spoil. This stuff isn't full of heavy metals so it's not all bad.
  25. I've asked for a chemical analysis, as they've chemists on site. It's built up ground but the ash is very dense, like icing sugar so drainage wise the water is going to run down through the topsoil and run down the slope. I don't think it will penetrate into the ash much, any root growth is going to be restricted to the 8 inches of top siol. They are doing it as the EA has told them to and they want to look like they have done something. They have no long term aim, the plant is to be closed in 2035. Their plan was to get root balled trees, dig a hole into the ash and fill it with top soil. This would just create undergound pots that at best would restrict the trees growth once they had out grown them but more likely just fill with water and kill the trees!
