  1. 1725 Hunter? Holby tuned engine if I recall right, rare in those days too! Modern cars don't have design flaws, they just cussed to working! Changing the alternator on my D4 was best part of two days! They (modern cars) are just not designed for DIY repairs! You are right about Renault Stewart, half a day to change a light bulb sounds right!
  2. My 1st was a MK2 Cortina 1600E, with Mexico decals on the side. 2nd was a 65 Beetle changed from 6v to 12v and fitted twin carb/twin port 1600 engine driving Pirelli P6 Zero on banded rims! 3rd was a MK2 RS2000 which had been a tarmac rally car but had standard engine by then. TEC300M got sold for £850 in 1985 with a dented front wing, done on the day the lad came to view it! 4th was a Lancia HPE, twin cam 2ltr and was lively but rusty!
  3. That ram geometry might get to a steep tip which ensures that compacted chip exits quickly, but, it would be pushing forward before it starts to push up! Awful lot of strain on the fabrications and pivots, you did well to avoid it. If you are doing mainly urban work, a 4x4 is unnecessary- you did well with the tipper!
  4. This vintage compressor is free to anyone who wants to collect it from close to the M1 in North Leicestershire. It was working when I got it and I used the motor on another compressor with a huge tank. To be honest, you can have both if you want!
  5. Best wishes to his family. Tragic loss locally, when we drove past each other, we had a wave, thumbs up etc, saw him last in the Mog at Hathern Turn. Never knew about the archery!
  6. My Uncle, Dave Barrowcliff, wrestled a monkey winch onto the backseat of his two door a couple of times in the 70's when the works trucks were booked out! That must have been a struggle! The car came from Batchelor & Bowels in Loughborough - long since replaced by the Multi Storey!
  7. Mate had an ex GPO HA van, you could rev that until valves bounced!
  8. I was with a client the other day, delivering 3 of our SafeTrac chippers and got introduced to John Brown of Magno-Flow. He was fitting strong magnets to the fuel system of every engine the client had in the yard. These magnets are to change the molecular structure of the fuel (petrol or diesel) which makes it burn quicker and better, improving MPG, power output and reducing emissions and noise levels. I'm always sceptical of stuff like this but, I watched him do a noise measurement before and after and reduced it by 3Db, which is a huge reduction in real terms. Still sceptical, he fitted the magnets to my Ranger and it has improved the mpg by about 4mpg per tank and I got the feeling that I didn't have the same degree of throttle to get about. I still am baffled by it and dead sceptical! If it is that good, why isn't it fitted as standard on all ICE? Anyone else tried this kind of thing.
  9. Tbh, I am not sure that we have enough Mills or skill set anymore! The whole process from growing to harvest, transport to the mill, conversion and transport to market costs too much in the UK for the mass market. Another time and another place - my family had a great deal of experience in milling but stopped converting timber to pit props in the mid 70's, but asked to supply more in the early 80's for the same terms. 87 caused a blip in supply otherwise, the timber just wasn't available in the same quantity to make it viable. There were plenty of Mills locally but all gone now. I did think of investing into it in the 90's but the returns didn't meet the investment requirements!
  10. Not work trucks but is an indication of market forces/needs/component supply, JLR are apparently switching production to the new defender as that sells better than some of their other models.
  11. Programme on radio 4 today about car prices, on some premium models like Audi, a used unit can be more than a new one due to people's impatience on a waiting list. Vans are at a premium too, as previously said, "last mile subbies" soaking them up!
  12. I saw some fair piles from Inverness down to Dunoon and Lochgilphead and wondered how much was for the sawmill and how much to biomass? The story got told originated from a UK importer who stated that the yanks had outbid many importers to get it sent away as their usual sources were not producing..... During the trip, hotels and restaurant staff were in short supply, as was farm labour/pickers and I did get told that even offering good money wasn't turning up many applicants.
  13. Someone told me that most Scandinavian sawn timber is going stateside at huge cost compared to what Brit importers were paying. HS2 is paying huge money which is attracting folk who weren't getting that level of pay elsewhere which is screwing up "local" employment.... There have been huge rises in the cistof imported materials and some stuff is in short supply and alternatives are having to be sourced from a wider, European market too.
  14. Remember that but forgot it! Thanks for the memory!
  15. "They don't put bay windows on shithouses" when someone called my Uncle Dave podgy!
  16. I still use that in wonderment on viewing someone with an odd look, clothes or particular mannerism!
  17. A saying from my Uncle that I now use, in mock surprise to something, "Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs!" Said in a northern accent....
  18. Yaxley-Lennon got stiffed in court, hopefully, this financial decision will reveal how much he has made from his law breaking activities and where the money has come from! Maybe some further pond life and scum will be named and shall be shamed!
  19. I would still think the worst of Cummings if he was behind Corbyn and Starmer! I do think that the toady Alistair and President Blair are another shameful pair with dubious ethics, morals and scruples who lied to the voters to get their way.....
  20. Cummings tried to oust his PM after the election!?! What a vile little turd, whilst I could be a traditional tory voter, they will never have my vote if he is involved I any way and that goes with any political party either!
  21. What is this thing you speak off, "legal capacity"? I thought the mantra of "if it is on, it is gone!" was an industry standard!
  22. I do wonder how engines will cope with EN10, and what additives will be needed for old engines which already need a lead replacement additive as they do not run well on unleaded?
  23. I see that that loathsome little man, Cummings, is giving his bitter and twisted version of his history again. He is the type of employee that every HR person would be looking to employ in the future, doesn't carry out instructions, disobeys the very instructions he is instrumental in putting in place, gossips about senior managers out of work, whinges publicly when he doesn't get his way and blames everyone else for his own demise. I wonder if, as part of the job, he signed confidentiality agreements such as the Official Secrets Act?
  24. I was in Dingwall last week and out on to the Black Isle, the Elms there have now been hit, scenery reminiscent of southern England some 30-40 years ago! And as you say, significant stands of ADB figure all over the place....
