  1. That made my eyes water too.....
  2. Don't spend too much money on books, spend a good few hours reading back threads on this forum. What you will find is real world tree surgery as apposed to idealised money no object projects. I would however recommend a tree id book (e.g. Collins Tree Guide) and 'the tree climbers companion' which is full of knots and climbing methods.
  3. can recommend the centre parks, went last septmber for a week. Centre parks to longleat is just about walkable There are some cheap deals on the centre parks website at the minute
  4. statutory maternity pay is reclaimed from the gov't, £100 ish a week for 2 weeks. Statutory Paternity Pay : Directgov - Money, tax and benefits Legal holiday entitlement is appox 2 days a month including bank holidays, you can buy these off the employee, just list it in the contract. You can state when your employees take holidays (e.g. when you have hols planned or xmas) Holiday entitlements: the basics : Directgov - Employment Statutory sick pay is again reclaimed from the gov't, you can state no sick pay if off for less than x days. Stops people knocking mondays or wet days Statutory Sick Pay : Directgov - Money, tax and benefits
  5. You can't use an internal inspector for your kit, you have a vested interest in the stuff passing (saving on replacements) so could be seen to go easy on your inspections. The whole idea of LOLER is the inspector is independent.
  6. And as a 3.5tonner it is full on your way to work with saws, ropes, etc so you wouldn't be able to take any chip off site
  7. could you not buy it off your brother in law second hand at a vastly reduced rate?
  8. 4x4play get Home - Auto-Lift Uk Ltd - Scissor Lift Tables, Electric Winches, LCV Bodywork, Thule Products this lot to do their tipper conversions. I have experience of previous conversions done by the above co and there is 'room for improvement'. Nene Overland is a company that always pops up as being reputable if expensive.
  9. Contact Iain Graham (Yorkshireman on here), I believe he is looking for a climber at the minute
  10. In 2 minds, I want to get back to tree work but the books are quiet at the minute so would have some down time. I want more snow as the firewood is going quite well and I have a snow plow for the landrover so can make a few quid out with that and the cab is reasonably warm. Kev
  11. A chipper isn't £150 a day - nearer £80 by me. You overheads will be lower so your day rate (before chipper) should be lower than the competition. Overall you will be slightly (certainly less than £50) more expensive than the equivalent competition with chipper but you get that sort of variation in quotes anyway. Either get a chipper on finance and work your backside off to pay for it or put less cash in your pocket, save and buy a cheap one to start off. The only way you can make a hired chipper pay is on a long term hire and work it hard every day
  12. you charge 17.5% you pay 9.5% PLUS the vat on all your purchases. It is estimated that this would equal near enough the 17.5% If I understand it correctly you either do flat rate (and pay vat on purchases/expenses upto £xk) or do standard vat, i.e. claim all vat paid but pay the hmrc at 17.5%
  13. I was basing it on the last 15 months with vat at 15%
  14. your charging more so paying more. Simple maths????
  15. you don't need to open an account, ring them up with your card number, give them your arbtalk user name, job sorted
  16. More of an igloo with a head on as an afterthought. We had to use a ladder to put the head on (in bits) due to the size, the hole is big enough for an adult to crawl into.
  17. Had the loader out doing a bit of clearing this afternoon. The neighbours want to get to work tomorrow.
  18. Sorry Bob, the 4th of April is already taken doing mine!!
  19. 2007 - £1300 2008 - £2020 2009 - £3565 Total - £6885
  20. you will make a killing provided the price is right. I wouldn't think anyone would want to pay more than a fiver a bag
  21. It all depends on how much use one is going to get and what size wood you will be chopping. Something like a Stihl MS181 or Stihl MS230 would be fine on wood up to about 12" diameter if you are preparing wood for yourself or yourself and a couple of others. If you are looking to go into supply you would be better with a slightly bigger and more robust (and more expensive) saw like a Stihl MS361. You will find you cannot buy Stihl chainsaws online officially as Stihl insist on a face to face handover for health and safety reason. You could buy from ebay but i would not recommend it as you may have little comeback if you have any issues. Let us know where you live and I am sure someone could recommend a local dealer who will guide you further
  22. I believe he is saying felling is fine, climbing however would be alot riskier than in the dry. Would your risk assessment not suggest finding something else to do if the tree will wait for better weather?
  23. Level 12? there are 9 games per stage so do you mean stage 12 or games 3 stage 2?
