  1. The love of the job and I suppose money. I only work 3 days a week and have my kids the other 2, my wife works full time and brings in most of the money. I packed in a £40k a year job as I didn't enjoy going to work there, the people were complete ?????? and the job was boring. Between me and the wife we had money to burn but hardly saw each other, it was living to work more than working to live. Money isn't everything but you do need a certain amount. You only live once so might as well do something you enjoy.
  2. 1996 stihl 044, got it last year from a customer who was scared of it. He had bought it new when they moved into a house with an open fire to sort out fuel but had only used it a couple of times, original chain, never been sharpened.
  3. put a tray of flowers/lettuce in as well then say you are using the polytunnels for their intended use and the wood is just filling unused space
  4. 4 new tyres on the xmas list i think
  5. There is no definitive answer to competent. Can you prove you are a competent tree climber? Yes, you should be qualified (to get this you will have been tested and observed) and in a court of law that qualification would be accepted as a proof of competence. To prove competence you must have had the task tested to an accepted level, for splices surely that must be to a given breaking strain and quality. There are defined methods for splicing (e.g. amount of buried cord, etc), if you follow these giude lines and if you have had some of your splices break tested (and they passed) you would be able to prove competence. Anyone else I would assume could be well practiced and possibly competent but not proven competent.
  6. Quite a bit on the hills above Holmfirth this morning which will hopefully start the phone ringing.
  7. proof of training in each example (not specific rope but style e.g 16 strand) and some sort of proof that the training you have gives splices of acceptable breaking strain. Is it possible to get your own splices inspected and tested to breaking by an approved body? We can all sit a training course and get a certificate of attendance but that is worth nothing if you didn't listen or understand
  8. An old picture but it shows the graphics. This cost me about £150 designed and fitted. It is printed vinyl stuck in single sections onto the aluminium sides and not cut vinyl. This is easier to look after and doesn't get caught on hedges/branches etc ripping letters off. Aiming mainly for domestic work, keep it simple - do you really need a dozen bullet points on the side of the van? Consider the background colour vs the text. It isn't possible to read the text on the darling buds of may van in the last picture - can your potential customers read it from the other end of the street. It will be your most seen advertising and will last you a few years so a few hundred on the van will be worth more than a few £k in the phone books
  9. A proper audi quattro - again one of my old beasts One of the best 4x4 cars that will do farm/woodland tracks as well is the audi allroad, as capable as the legacy, more clearance and german build quality
  10. My old one, sold it back in 2003/4. Excellent track toy and a really quick road car. Sold it as the insurance when people were having the keys stolen from houses.
  11. Looks like he has gone home for the weekend without pictures and tempting prices for us all. Must have been too much booze in the states that has pickled his brain
  12. when I did 30/31 at kirkys they split the group in half on assessment day, one lot going to fell for the 31 while the other did the maintenance for the 30. The 2 groups swapped after lunch. I assume Iain means this must now stop even though it was never allowed in the first place
  13. More expensive than a new warrentied one from Jonesie........
  14. It's identical to the one on my entec ch25ph which is unbraked so it will be different to the 250
  15. Along the lines of ' I feel you are rather good at your chosen trade' only spoken in true Yorkshire
  16. Just had a look at mine and I too think it is the plate on which you mount the trailer hitch. The 4 holes on the sides mount to the 2 chassis legs. The 50mm hole is to store the trailer electrical socket. This all assumes the plate is approximately half the size of a sheet of A4 paper.
  17. Consider either one of the micro chippers (see shreks wee chipper thread) or for the same money a second hand 6" roller fed chipper. You can always upgrade and if you buy a presentable 6" machine then you are not going to lose much if any money. Worth a look TW 125 - nice small machine, 5" intake, easy to push about Entec Ch25PH - petrol engine makes them cheaper to buy than the diesel equivalent 6" greenmech
  18. Enjoy the 'business trip' .......
  19. I do sloe gin but prefer Damson gin. Basic recipe for mine is 1/4 bottle sugar, fill the bottle to the top with pricked damsons or sloes then fill with gin. Usually get half a litre of gin in a litre bottle. I have got 15 bottles of damson and 5 bottles of sloe on the go. Damson has been bottled since september and the sloes are last years brew. I think they need at least 12 months with the berries before filtering to taste there best. Kev
  20. you not seen yorkshire sheep, the rings will go round your leg!!
  21. or castration rings obtained from your local farmer
  22. State on the letter that you will be charging £x in addition if you have to take the matter to either court or to a solicitor
