  1. Umm, thats not strictly true either.
  2. This is not true - the guru Mattheck describes trees as 'self-optimizing mechanical structures' - i.e. they adapt their shape according to environment and stress factors to maintain the strongest structure possible. Easily demonstrated if you take a very young tree and prop it so it leans to one side. In a short space of time the leader will grow in the opposite direction to the lean and then right itself to grow vertically. As far as I can see, trees only become imbalanced through the loss of a major limb/sub-stem or through root-plate movement.
  3. Weird! Looks like a right pain the arse job!
  4. Just spoke to a good mate last night - he managed to be one of the lucky ones that got tickets through the ballet so got them at the original price of £125 each. He went and sold the second ticket for £1500 lucky bugger. He said the gig was amazing.
  5. Big A - are you suggesting that a simple purchase of raffle tickets for this worthy cause could indeed make our christmas wishes come true?! Cool!
  6. I thought it sent out juglone from the roots rather than in leaf litter. In which case you would probably be ok. ...ok, just looked it up online - apparently juglone is produced in leaves and bark as well but in much smaller concentrations. Fingers crossed for you!
  7. I heard a bloke on the radio today who paid 20,000USD for 2 tickets. Ouch! Sounded like an amazing gig though.
  8. Ha ha! No doubt the other side was better mate. For everyone else's information on here - Stu (jr hartly) was in the tree with me and has taught me most of what I know. Cheers Stu!
  9. Here are some pics a mate of mine took last week at Westonbirt - in December they light up the trees at night for an eerie enchanted wood look. I thought he took some really nice shots.
  10. Ah, you made it Stu! Welcome. There's a picture of our maple from friday in the Tree Pics thread if you wanna see it.
  11. Thanks Tockmal - client was the council this time; they tend to ask for alot of reductions but there you go.
  12. This morning's job - crown reduction of norway maple. Forgot to get a before picture. And me in the tree.
  13. Just spent the whole day getting rained on in my ex-military goretex - stayed nice and dry on the inside which ain't bad for trousers and jacket both for about £50.
  14. I have a 17 year old hilux which has been great to me - tows the chipper well on and off road, not too bad on the diesel but not great for long distances. If I was buying new I would look at the Navaras and perhaps the Isuzu Rodeos, they look pretty good.
  15. Have worn salsb gloves for a few days now and I must say they are very good. First gloves I have been able to climb in as they are nice and tight and thin enough to feel your ropes through.
  16. Ouch! Thanks for that honest post Tockmal. They are the kind of stories that make me refocus on always playing safe.
  17. Any lions or other big cats in the area? Looks like a mega scratching post!
  18. Superb! Made it look so easy.
  19. Not all ladies are small surely?
  20. I like the hoodies. Was also flicking thru the Wild Trees book as mentioned above yesterday in a shop - looks like a good read. Better be a good boy so father christmas brings me such goodies...
