  8. it depends on who you want to reach & how you advertise as to whether it stacks up
  9. weak unions & over weight limbs Not a great fan of bracing, due to the artifical altering of the trees structural dyanamics ,when the tree finally needs to be removed it poses a massive hazard to the climber. in an ideal world better tree management would stop this however its far from an ideal world I had a very interesting chat with a TO today & yes remedial or interventional works could save many excellent specimens however at the time when its would be good to do the management works to the client it doesnt seem that important re the expense to the client for a possible outcome manty years ahead however when the events play out and the result is finally evident the issues in mosts cases are well beyond managing time to admit enoughs enough A shame but in all to many cases it is sadly the truth.
  10. Going back to the first post the beauty of offering a quote is no-one is bound to it Anyone can give away their time, its there choice. I doubt very much it would be so in their day job & I doubt if you asked them to go to work for £20 a day they'd be somewhat relucant & if the guy cant see the difference then its no loss really is it. horses for courses & donkeys on beaches
  11. Heres a few pics 2 different trees
  12. a very nice job I luv crane work , I just arent keen on the trees that need them I would have been a tad nervous watching him slew past that bungalow mind .. Was the timber single stropped ? iain
  13. thx guys Its one of those jobs I'll always remember
  14. it was interesting to say the least lots of thinking as well as Doing We had one of the team watching the split for any movement we had to keep assessing the dynamics as we removed the weight , it was made all the more difficult as we had to make a clearance in the canopy to allow for the off cuts to be lowered as it was such a tight work zone, the crane had very little slew capacity due to the sister tree on one side & the electric lines on the other, so we had to take more canopy from oneside initially . I was more than wide awake during that bit. if we had downed the electric cable it would have caused a ripple affect for miles, but they wouldnt drop the wires. A great sense of acheivement though.
  15. You got it Steve & Swb A lot of both .. I did one half closest to the power lines & my lead climber did the other half I Slept well that night once the adrenolin worn off ......... I hadnt climbed for a while too I expexted to hurt more but I was good & yep that was THE most dangerous tree I have ever SEEN & worked on Thx to all for the words
  16. If I told you that stevie you'd end up as dumb as me Lol !! It was the only way, as that puppy was very unstable the split ran right through to the other side & hadsplit down another 4" from the evening prior to us getting onsite to sort it
  17. We finished at 19.30 we did book the elec board for an 0900 shut down but they didnt switch off untill 1300 that meant we were hard pushed & the crane was on by the hour 4 hours set waiting Gutted !!!!!! yes the anchor point was the jib end of the crane via shackles & cambium saver to reduce friction
  18. Heres a few pics from a job we had Electric lines on two sides 2 two roads 1 stream Another big boy right next to it slap bang in the middle of a conservation area in the national park OH & a very big split in the main stem
  19. put in your directional fell sink cuts then with the saw in the vertical score the outer bark at the point you want your hinge to be on both sides of the stem then when the saw is in the horizontal ie back cut you can lean over to see how far the bar has to go & can compare the near & distant to ensure a similar width also if the back cut is not flat try thumbing the throttle rather than with a normal grip as the hand leads to a natural down ward angle of the bar
