  1. Aspire to be now enough to call myself an arborist one of these days Strange how over time 'tree surgeon' has become synonymous with people who just cut down trees

  3. A pic, id, cause and effect thread would be spot on. They never seem to look the same in id books as they do in real life/real life photos. Would be good for reff and let a lot of us benifit from others knowledge

    Ohhh my plumbs

Thanx for your input of knowledge:thumbup1: I only ever prune them to retain form against the fence, remove damage, etc. I should really have thinnned out a bit this summer but it has been one of them years.

    Ohhh my plumbs

Not good with fruit trees but think plumbs etc fruit of 2 year old growth not last years like apple. The plumb tree seems to go on 2 year cycle, prob to do with the way I prune it with being trained

    Ohhh my plumbs

Basically the same as Damson/Sloe Gin (bottle gin/2lb fruit/1lb sugar - once you have made some adjust to your taste). Got to freeze fruit first though even just overnight. Give it a shake every day until sugar disolves and resist decanting it as long as you can. When you have finished have the fruit with cream - but watch the portion size, a mate didnt last year, when he tried to stand up he fell flat on his face

    Ohhh my plumbs

Crumble/Jam etc (the wifes bit ) Made some plumb Gin last year, more will be on the way soon
  8. Trained a few fruit trees along our fence a few years back. Seems to be a good plumb year
  9. Thats what I was getting at Lee. The basic wage will differ from area to area. From a business point of view I think an employee is more likely to contribute/work well if he feels part of the company and less prone to p off at the first opp.
  10. But it sums up what could happen if things hit the fan
  11. £175 and tops to local shoot (they want alll my green tops for ground cover under sitka )
  12. That would be £15.5 - £19.5K then! (Or to put it another way about £18K) A good groundy with climbing tickets would prob = better worker than a whanna be climber with his head up his How about a lower wage eg £14K working on a bonus system?
  13. Some Pics from Port Patrick the other year. Josh/Sophie (Wrass mad!)/the better half & a grumpy old git!
  14. No need to explain shee knows you it obvious Glad you all had a good day, will be there next time
  15. At least they have some trees to climb
  16. You'd better make it late October onward then Some northern folk might even come down to watch
  17. No.3 was the nearest I have ever come to not being here any more. Playing catch up in half light dropping down the to Thirlmere from Grasmere 'that' hump too fast. One of those 'time stands still' moments. Can still remember looking down while airborn seeing car healights on the right, stone wall on the left . Luckily landed in the middle with a bit of a slapper, stopped asap and had 3 smokes one after the other, then went back home at about 40 for a change of underwear.
  18. May be perfectly true but I will not do more than 55k before I change, so it depends upon life/mileage expectancy as to which way to go. My choice was to save £100 on a set of tyres that will outlast how long i own the vehicle
  19. White wall outside look xxxx if you get a bit of wear on the outside - wife uses kirb vs tyre to judge how close she is (white shows through the rest of the side wall) Have you looked at General Grabber AT2's, very (very) similar to BFG AT's but £15 - £20 cheaper.

    splicing course

Many thanks to Nod, the course was spot on Thanks also to Bob for sorting everything out and Pete for the lift from his house (far too many roads in a place like that for a country git like me ) A long day (04:45 - 21:00 ) but well worth it!
  21. Posted the above links a while ago on another thread. From what I can remember (and i use as a rule if thumb) every mm of rope/inch timber diam/4' length of timber ie a 16mm rope will lower 16" diam of timber 4' long in a rigging situation. Once over 16" diam you should reduce length accordingly or increase rope diam. Not my theory but written by someone who knows more than I ever will! ps dont run your esterlon through natural re directs!
  22. Not certain about the advertise bit. But what networking will mean is that look at promoting yourself at a higher level knowing/and providing that you can get X to help with certain aspects of jobs etc, etc. I think its been said before that not many are be able to do everything, but by networking this becomes more of a reality along with being able to take on larger conracts etc. In a lot of ways it is no more than a practical version of arbtalk.

    Mountain bikes!!!

If you are looking for new get a copy of MBUK, they normally have loads of bikes being offered (esp last years spec) at good discounts. Got the boys Rockhopper A1 like that and saved over 150.
  24. I think its great in the right environment (and for creating its own ecosystems etc) and would love to have a job like that to do some day - for the right reasons. One question: If there is a public target how do you decide where to reduce too? The pics still show potential for regrowth into a relatively large crown giving a higher lever arm than a lower reduction (given the risk of base decay must be high). Nice job IMO
