  1. Sorry Lee, respect most things you say but bol:thefinger:lux As far as the original question goes, insurance will prob not cover existing/known conditions and his work load should be planned so as to avoid (as far as practical) the situations outlined or have contingency plans in place with RA's and EP's to cover them. Provided people are honest and open and everyone is happy with the situation someone should not be prevented from doing something they want. Would you rather have someone with years of experiance and a potential bad back rescue you or someone who just passed aerial rescue a week ago?

    Climbing wedge

Thats why im so desperate for help
  3. Have been going to sort myself a small wedge to use when climbing for ages but never got round to it yet. Whats the best way to attatch the wedge? I was thinking of screw eye in to side of wedge with a length of thin starter cord onto small tool krab.
  4. Count me in please Steve
  5. Justin Sorry to hear about your back. I have had 3 ops in the past (95 – 2000) involving 7 discectomies and 4 laminectomies so I know what you will be going through. Do what you are told and don’t push yourself. As far as physiotherapy and medication go everyone is different. After my third operation (by one of the top specialists) I was banned from physiotherapy apart from swimming – and it worked. When you come round from the operation I don’t think you will be too concerned about going to the toilet! Take it easy on the meds, especially as you start to feel better – the worst thing you could do is try and do something you shouldn’t without realising. Hope all goes well Richard Ps pic of 3rd opp after staples had been removed – something to look forward to (not!)
  6. Saw this on the wat to look at a job tonight (on a very old cherry) Dont think the owners (not the same people as the job I was looking at) are chickening out of dealing with it, just ignoring it
  7. Not me im affraid (or not!). I do drive a disgusting coloured Hilux (according to the wife ) Mark, I agree re hollow trees, after all they are often left standing while all around perish during storms because of thier ability to flex. It is the hollow combined with the onset of decay and the potential targets that got me going. As conkers says, if it is on its way out now better sectioned down while still safe to climb.
  8. Thanks Dave (one of the left limbs will also take out the gable of the garage and there is a public access the other side of the hedge)/Tony (concentrating too much on decay, did not think about the concequences of the epi ) IMO it should go, I guess I was just after some reasurance/confirmation because the owner feels so stongly about the tree. That said she seems happy go along with my advice whatever the outcome (and will replant) Richard.
  9. Looked a i job last week to basically do some deadwooding and crown cleaning on some Syc/Oak/etc. The customer asked me to have a look around the rest of her trees to give them a quick check. The wallnut is obviously not a good specimin with a big lean and having had some poor line clearance limb removal done in the past, but held in high regard by the customer. The cavity is existing and previously known about. There is little to no heatwood left at the base of the tree. The base decay is new. It is at 90 deg to the lean of the tree and the cavity hole. The customer would like to retain the tree. My mind (and logic) says one thing and my heart another so any comments appreciated. It would obviously be nice to get a scan of the cross section, anyone know the cost of/if you can hire in pico's etc ? Thanx
  10. Pic of the Monkey, not very big but i do not fancy hand balling it. My boy - in normal hands in pocket mode! - is 6'3" for scale.
  11. Fine line between stupid and innovative (and i have not had a drink yet)
  12. Reduce height and thin crown then plant a bloody big beech under the leaning section of the more healthy stem. Let it graft and act as a natural prop
  13. Did some work for a school last year. They have just sent me an email saying that they are having an extension built (start Sept). There is a Monkey puzzle that needs to be moved if poss due to the extension. No experiance of these what so ever. Dont know the size (will have a look out one night). Has anyone any experiance with them? Ta,
  14. Not going too close this year. Hedge cutting about 6 or 7 mile down the road is as close as i will get. Last year was not a good year for trouble. I hope this year is better. There are some very nice people who go, but as normal it is usually spoiled by the minority.
  15. Asked someone who installs full systems and he said they are OK. The tip he gave was to cadge an installers sticker to put on the external cover. Scum will then think twice because pro fitters will change standard spec to fix known loop holes in a system. Richard.
  16. I was told you can actually claim for the dogs food if it is used as a guard dog Also told all expenses plus £10-£12/week for the use of home.
  17. Customer sent a couple of pics from Oak lift from power lines last week. No one handed comments needed
  18. Little at a time! Very easy to do too much and they suffer really bad.
  19. I can understand what u are saying but the program is made for Joe Public, not Mr Arborist. We all want more public awareness so IMO it is all good press. It would be nice to see a series like this finish off with a "Week in the life of an Arborist" type program to help Joe Public get a better understanding of our role and promote the use of qualified contractors.
  20. Think it will depent on the trees and how competent the candidate looks, but more importantly which side of the bed the assessor gets out of. When I did mine a while back I ended up topping down 30' up an Oak butt nearly 11/2 x guide bar. Would have been a bit much for someone if they had not done a lot of spike work.
