I did a few calcs a while back and this is how it worked out; 24 ton load of cord delivered @ £50 ton; £1200. Hired in guy with processor @ £350 day; £700. 35 cube produced @ £80 cube; £2800. The above is showing the definative costs involved. No mention of my 2days wages at processing, bags, fuel, vehicle costs, storage, time on delivery, being messed around, handling & delivery machinery etc, etc. It may initially apear a nice profit margin, but in reality its not much, and IMO for the guys who rely on this set up for a living, they deserve that return for the investment.
  2. But you could mix it in with that posh Harrogate stuff fella:lol:
  3. Asking for a mate, but what do you guys think is the best market for some good sized woodland Pop? Its all very clean and straight, about 100 feet trees upto 4 feet DBH. Could be approx 100 tons to be extracted in a couple of months time. Any great ideas?
  4. There's about 100 ton if you fancy a punt:thumbup1:
  5. Could get you plenty of Pop Johnny. Ooops, sorry I mean yellow ash.

    They still however expect quality!

Steve, I agree totally. About 15 years ago I used to do a "log run" dropping the odd few small bags here and there. At one point, I had around 40 seperate customers, but only one of them required logs for heating.
  8. Note this story comes in the middle of the "winter" season, and in the midst of a very "cold spell" in a year when "sales of log burning stoves have rocketed". Almost like a power company spreading a little panic and paying for an editoral in a national rag to me. Perhaps Im cynical:001_rolleyes:

Well done Big J. Another point being overlooked is carbon footprint. Regardless of cost compared to gas, oil and eleccy, log burners are the ethical choice. Surely?
  10. Click on this and half way down is a skidding cone. Not sure if Wesspur post to UK though:confused1: Portable Winch for sale at WesSpur Tree Equipment
  11. I was on a job like that a few weeks ago. I subbed to a landscraper as a climber and supplying chipper. I stripped side limbs off as the head landscaper insisted he would "slot" the tree through a gap saving time blocking down. He intended well but cut through the hinge and it went 90 deg through the next door orchard, shed and garage:001_rolleyes: I then covered up all the sign writing on my truck!
  12. A MASSIVE amount of oil will not stop a chain sparking if the saw gets stuck trapped. My point was purely about how we, as contractors are made to jump through hoops to meet specific restrictions, often made up by safety officers that have no real understanding of how chainsaws, and our industry for that matter, actually work. Laughable IMO.
  13. I wonder how he got on with the rest that was leaning towards his own house:sneaky2:
  14. So if they are worried about there being enough gas for an engine to run on, (classed as a significant leak) surely that amount of gas could be inginted by a spark from the chain?
  15. Also, it is possible to fit spark arrestors to chainsaws. Some even have them fitted new.
  16. If you get real stuck, give a dive engineering company a ring. They may be able to help. I assume you need one for the spark restrictions working near the pipe. Its slightly amusing to a point that there are restrictions implimented in such a way that a petrol engine should not be used, but has anyone said anything about reducing the spark from the chain? Sorry if that was a slight derail, but hope you get sorted.
  17. Dont feel guilty about cashing in when everyone elses supply has gone Steve. Unfortunately I have lost my complete stock due to building failure, otherwise I would have been sticking the prices up now. You need to put it into context, you can offer great discounts when its out of season to keep you going in quiet times, so why should you charge a regular price when its crazy season? Worth a try on flea bay IMO, it wont cost you much if they dont sell:sneaky2:
  18. In short Steve, you are a star:thumbup: If I had any to sell, I would be doing the same:thumbdown:

There seems to be more and more of these type of threads, costs of this that and the other going up. Why is it as suppliers, so many are scared of putting up the price of our end product? Go for it, all other industries mange to justify it!
  20. Very nice link Tom, I get it now. Took piccys to get me there though. It appears there may be an initial wabble when setting off, but in itself is what balances the wheel. Cheers for that Tom, many thanks.
  21. Yep, cheers Tom, but i still dont see how the tyre knows where the extra weight or less weight should be and how it gets there. I have a vision of the stuff rolling around as the vehicle sets off, then when it reaches a certain speed the "stuff" sticks to the outside due to centrefugal forces making it do so. I cant see how this is automatically the correct place to balance the wheel. I am willing to be educated here:confused1:
  22. Im curious, how does the sand/shot actually settle in the correct places in the tyre? The way i see it, is the weight will stop rolling wherever it happens to be when the centrofugal force stops it rolling. Cant imagine how it moves to the correct place to balance the wheel. Very interested how this would work. Is there any info or link about it?
