The point I am making is that you dont have to be a top notch climber to get on in the arb industry, or to run your own business. In fact, if a few less firms were run by climbers then the whole industry would be a lot more professional. The point of the thread though is about climbing ability, and as with any skill the younger you start the more you will achieve.

Interesting. I have some observations from some time in the industry spent with different firms. There are plenty of good businessmen running successful arb firms who are mediocre climbers. There are plenty of good climbers running firms who are out of their depth business wise. There are a few people out there with their own firms who quite frankly are rubbish climbers and suck at running a business. The best climbers I have worked with have started young.

Yes, and the second part of the question is; If you had started at the age of 20, do you think you would have been a better all round climber?

Paul, how would you rate yourself as a climber, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being a trainee who has just passed his CS39, and 10 being Reg Coates?

Yes. As it was, there was plenty of holding wood, I bored through the hinge, so I knew there wasnt much hold in the discoloured areas, and left the sound hinge wood thicker to compensate.

What system do you climb on at present? ie split tail, prussic etc? Dont bother with lockjacks and shiney toys for now, get the basics and then work up from there.

Just a shame it costs so much to rebuild it afterwards. Cool idea though, kudos to the designer for the live test!

I think it would have stood forever left to its own devices. The decay seemed walled off nicely, and it had put on huge amounts of stem thickening in the last few years, as you can probably see in the top of the last pic. Are you saying the fluting is an indicator of central decay? There was certainly no holding strength in the hinge where its discoloured, just sheared straight away. Felling was more fun than crane on this occasion...

Little beech I felled the other day, 65-70' tall, 32" diameter at felling height, used a 25" bar. Significant backlean, over gardens/houses behind. No external signs of decay. Being felled as the building on the left is being demolished and rebuilt. Had a tracked chipper to pull, wedges as backup, set the pull rope by throwline.

If its a choice between reduce to 6 foot or fell, then it doesnt really matter whether they survive or not. Either way, you get paid and the client is happy. FWIW, I think they will survive.

You cant sell by the tonne without weighing it. The only measurement you can quantify on site would be volume.
