  1. The answer is in your first post. Thorough examination means a detailed examination by a competent person, who has the appropriate practical and theoretical knowledge and experience to enable them to detect defects or weaknesses and assess their importance in relation to the safety and continued use of the lifting equipment [294]. Do you currently have the training, skills and experience to perform a thorough examination of climbing equipment? As a climber, you know enough to do the weekly checks, but have not been trained to carry out a thorough examination. There is no definition written down anywhere that will tell you what qualification you need, however NPTC do offer an assessment. Perhaps you could ask your training provider to confirm whether or not your NPTCs enable you to do a thorough examination or not?

    Hardwood

The way to buy round timber for firewood is by the tonne, and most timber merchants wont be interested in anything less than a full artic load, 25 tonne ish, or a full 8 wheeler load, 20 tonne ish. Expect to pay £38-45 plus vat per tonne for hardwood thinnings. Little bit less for larger diameter material.
  3. Mulchers dont grind stumps, but I'm sure you knew that anyway. With regard to the chipper, would it not be worth your while getting the timber out for firewood?
  4. Looks like frost damage to me. I would cut it down, although it may recover. In winter, tie the leaves up into a bunch with an elastic band, this stops water and snow gathering in the growing point and freezing.
  5. Did they ask for a Bart Simpson?

  7. You cant transport green waste and then burn it on another site. You can burn green waste on site, but once you have moved it somewhere else its completely off the cards. Its a bit different to agriculture where your moving waste from one part of a farm to another. Get on the Environment Agency website and check out the green waste regs, carrying, tranfering, and processing. As an alternative, why not stockpile the stuff and once you have enough get one of the big biomass companies out to chip it for you and take it away. If you have enough and its the right quality they will do that for free.

    Beech fail.

Nice! I'd probably have climbed it too, but then the healthiest looking trees are usually the ones that actually fail. The trick is to not climb it on the day that it decides to go over........
  9. This is one I am doing at the moment.
  10. Looks like a graft hybrid or chimera, but its not one I have seen before. The most common one is Laburnum and Cytisus, the broom leaves look right but the other one doesnt look like laburnum.
  11. You will need to arrange your own bookings for camping, you may be able to get a space on the day, best to check with the campsite.
  12. I think its a good scheme in almost every way, however it isnt promoted over here like it is in the US, if there was a big push on public awareness from the ISA, promoting it to the domestic and commercial sectors as a hallmark of a good contractor, then I would get on it tomorrow.
  13. Is it not the fact that alcohol is crippingly expensive? Perhaps you could drink Aspen instead?

    Deer

Should have grabbed it by the ears and nutted it hard between the eyes like a proper man instead of poncing about with the rifle then!
  15. Sorry, you'll have to take that up with Craig!
  16. It will use a little more juice, that extra power has to come from somewhere, although that is offset by the faster cutting.
  17. No, sorry.
  18. No, Craig texted me to say he was having trouble posting while in Europe, and about Rhys.
  19. Rhys only missed the masters by 4 points.
  20. Its ok Frank, we all know about your mobile hairdressing outfit, I think its pretty cool actually. Dont worry about the big boys bullying you, they are only jealous.
  21. VOSA dont make any rules, they just enforce them. The rulemakers are the democratically elected government.
  22. Thats a fantastic life for a dog. Most pampered pooches would have a heart attack if you told them to catch their own supper, probably run down to Tesco for a bit of shoplifting!
  23. You wont be disappointed.
  24. I'v heard similar theories before, emulating natural conditions. Not eating regular meals might well be closer to nature, so is scavenging rotting carcasses, worms, ticks and fleas, and other infections. No-one seems to want to emulate those in their own pack! Regular feeding is part of the routine for a domesticated dog, changing that must be done with care to avoid distress. Having said that, if it works for you, then great!
  25. I regularly hang a 660 on my black diamond. The petzl isnt quite so strong, but they only cost about a fiver so if it lasts a year I'm more than happy. Normal length saw strop does me fine, 150 cm when extended, the bungee type with a steel ring near the saw end. The steel ring clips into the clipper, the biner end stays attached to the red ring all the time. Dont mind a bit of arse bashing myself, but I find with the saw clipped up high and slightly aft of hip it doesnt get in the way too much.
