Going against such things that would have their own private security in place would require having some guts. Blocking school mums and pensioners whilst a police force that effectively have their hands tied behind their backs is a much easier and safer target -

I took a hang of New England fly to my local chandlers many years back, splice was fine but needed rewhipping. I enquired in the main office if it was something the lads could handle as it was an unusual splice. The guy replied along the lines of ‘my guys are familiar with every splice’. Well they clearly weren’t when it came to it, there was 3 of them gathered round it full of intrigue 😀

Surely you must be inundated with chandlery's down there? I've had ropes spliced at such places before now.
