I've lost a pitch fork, a rake, some plastic wedges and some nice new files all on different jobs when I've been the groundie and I've always replaced them ( I lost them I replaced them ) when it comes to anything over twenty quid I always do a double check in the van. One of my climbers lost a cambium saver a few week back he's needed it every day he's been out, he's now getting fed up with washing sap from his ropes every couple of days

I feel for him as he must feel like an idiot. No excuse really though. Should always have a count up of power tools especially before leaving site. I guess your approach depends on how valued he is as an employee. Is he a slack arse who is always breaking or losing stuff? If so I'd make him pay for it or at least half if you cannot claim on insurance. If I had lost one I would offer to pay my boss back to be honest and hope he doesn't take me up on the offer.

it was my saw & you said you had put all the kit away so no need for me to check was there

My guys left the almost brand new 880 and a 261 on site a few weeks ago. I got a phone call from someone saying I have just seen someone putting your saws in the back of their car and the number plate.

 

I was about to call the police when the guy who was spotted with the saws called and told me he had my saws safe.. I could have kissed him. The guys I could have ......! He has earn't himself free logs for life...

Good story, how can anyone leave saws like that on site, I mean there are people on here actually talking about buying Dolmars, Makitas and worse 'cos the main brands are too expensive!

I should probably keep this to myself, but what the heck. I can beat you all hands down. I once left a chipper on site

 

Unknown to me, one of the lads had unhitched the chipper, can't even remember why. Packed up tools and drove back to the yard(about 3 miles away), boss was standing there and asked where the chipper was. Think I broke every speed limit on the way back to the site and fortunately it was sitting right where I left it

 

This was many many years ago, and could have ended a whole lot worse.
