What do people pay?

People will pay as little as they can to get what they need ...just the same as most customers look for the cheapest quote . I do think this work should pay better than it does , especially compared to some other trades , but things are as they are and it seems unlikely to change any time soon ....... I am happy though and that is worth quite a bit !!

People get really excited about tree work and I've no idea why.

 

It's easy, basically anyone with 50% of a functioning brain can do 90% of the work and the cream, who are really good or smart rise to the top.

 

Same as every other industry. There are many analogies I could use but a London escort does not charge the same as a crack whore from the back streets. Yet, is the end result not the same?

I think the point that Flat Tyre is making is that there is more potential danger in tree work than there is e.g. stacking shelves in a supermarket, that would explain the requirement for training/assessment/on site risk assessment/PPE/Insurance and would go some way to explaining why the HSE consider Tree Surgery to be one of the/the most dangerous job in the UK.

 

Of course with training and experience the risks of injury are reduced, the actual job doesn't get less dangerous but we strive to operate safely in such an enviornment.

Risk is the severity of an action and the likelihood of that action occurring.

I.e. risk - being struck by falling timber

Severity - potentially fatal

Likelihood - very unlikely (hopefully) due to experience and training

Risk is low (hopefully) but the severity remains unchanged.

Doesn't matter how many tickets or qualifications or years experience you have,if your flat packed by a ton of timber your probably dead on smashed to bits.

So overall the job is dangerous. End off.
