Decent people/clients

From a personal viewpoint, that gesture of kindness and civility is almost unheard of in my area. That would make my day too Dave.

Sometimes the client, after all my pleasantries and talk through of the job in hand are done, when it finally comes to me giving him the price, turns on his heels and walks back into his house without hardly uttering another word.

Probably going for his wallet to give you a deposit:biggrin:

Many folks in my area of France usually give you a good bottle of wine or some cash for a visit if they like your punctuality and the knowledge you impart.

Not here, although the old custom was to charge a client 50euros for a quote and take 30% up in front before you started a job.

This has all but died out these days.

Had one recently, quoted for a conny dismantle, client wouldn't have it but I could see what was involved - it might have only been 12' high but the stem was nearly 3' diameter (had been trimmed for 50 years) so he wanted to haggle and I met him half way (all over £25).

Not long after we started he said there was a cheque on the driver's seat, it was full amount quoted along side a top bottle of wine...

Regards,

Steve.

Recently looked at a large reduction job for a customer in my local village. I'd been recommended to her by other people in the village so hoped I'd got the job. I knew that she was getting a couple of other quotes as well so priced the job and waited to hear from her.

I had a phonecall and she asked if I could pop round for a chat about the spec on the job.

When I arrived we chatted about the job and she said I was the cheapest which I didn't think I would be as I'd put a fair price on the job. She said I was a couple of hundred cheaper than the next person and that if I upped my price by £100 she would get me to do the job!

Now I've never had that before a customer wanting to pay more. The job was a good earner on my original price so will earn even better on the new price there nowt queer as folk I guess

Shame it's not like that in Britain

Maybe it's an area thing. I've had a £200 tip for doing an engineering job over a weekend to get the guy ready for Monday's work. Recently I looked at a good electric chop saw after work for a friend. Turned out just brushes so didn't take long. He offered money which I declined but next day there was a bottle of good wine on my windscreen. What goes around comes around.
