I don't use a saw much these days, but years ago when I did I never had any fancy vices or clamps. I just used to cut about 3" into a log or stump and rest the saw in the cut with another suitable log under the handle. Does no one do this these days?

Yes they do. Some CS32 instructors pass it on.

 

I have a bench vice on a 3' length of railway sleeper. Works great.

Clamp the bar and starter covers between knee and heel and lean over the saw ,I've worked with a few rugby playing lads who can't get in this position and have to use a vice in branches and stumps though.

Just put roughly half a guide bar cut with the chainsaw into any reasonable size log and away you go , found it much steadier than those silly little log vice thingies.
