I just use starter cord

 

If you must do this make sure the piston is above the exhaust port when you feed the string in, otherwise you can jam the engine and break a ring.

 

I've worried about bending a conrod using this method which is why a battery impact driver with a free engine is better.

 

My old husqvarnas had a shallow nut which a combi spanner fitted so I adapted a spark plug socket by grinding it to 3 prongs to increase the contact area

You do not need to lock the piston, the clutch is jarred off against compression with the correct tools, the flywheel is held with the correct tool to undo the flywheel nut.

 

Sounds much better, what tool do you use to hold the flywheel?

Skyland, part no. 575251401 is for the three shoe clutch on the 560, Mark Bolam your contribution only fits the domestic clutch as fitted to the 36/136/41/141/137/236/240 as i said the tool is part no. 502541601, if i ever catch any body inserting anything into the cylinder to lock the piston i will insert something into them DONT DO IT.

 

Yep sorry your right, I was looking at the current husky workshop manual which still has the 3 prong one as the tool to use! Forgot they changed it from the 560 clutch and decided a complete clutch should now cost three times the price of the 560:sneaky2:

I can't thank you lot enough for the help! ADW you are an Aladdins cave of knowledge on the matter! Being a motocross rider and having done all my own wrench work for years I'm not shy of getting my hands dirty but I do wish I could just give you my saw and be done with it! Everything just seems so dainty and delicate and I don't like working without the correct tools, which I won't, I'm just going to have to get them I guess!

I am also now concerned as I did stuff a recoil rope in the barrel at bottom dead centre and cranked it until it stopped, I was thinking at the time 'I hope that hasn't gone down a port' but I have heard so many say thats what they do and it was what I had been advised to do by a supplier in Exeter when I went in looking to buy the tools, anyway, I couldn't get it off with a smart crack with a mallet and left it at that before posting on here but I am worried now that I could have caused damage!

I made a two pin spanner out of an old socket to get the clutch off my 135 and it works fine. I wind the piston to the top and just leave room for the cord and have never had any problems with it trapping in the ports as they should be covered.
