self propelled chipper (Shreks wee chipper)

i have toyed with the idea of a tracked chipper for a while now, but the fact that it is on tracks i find a pest, they rip up lawns, dislodge slabs and are pretty crap in the mud. and turning them on hard standing is a night mare unless you dont mind recking the tracks. can you get a 4 wheel chipper that is self propelled?even a small woodpecker on the likes of a scag base unit would be awesome.

i knew someone that fitted a caravan mover and he swore by it

although obviously limited on terrain

i wanted one of those years ago but the guy wouldnt come and demo it. there was a guy in the fbt magazine that made motors that fitted onto the chipper wheels, i think he was from cornwall, this was a few years back now

You can fit caravan mover motors on any light chipper.

I don't think tracked chippers really have any of the problems you stated above Steve.

 

They only rip up Lawns or paving slabs if you turn them in to tight a circle.

 

Turning the variable track machines on hard standing is easy if you narrow the tracks in.

 

I have been impressed with how little damage the machine does to peoples gardens,even when the grass is soaking wet.The weight of the machine spread out over two tracks is so much less than a four wheel machine.

Yes I fitted a caravan mover to my chipper and it's still going strong!

 

For what it is it's pretty expensive but the company has fitters nationwide and costs a £1,000-00 in total. I still use mine all the time and although slow it's a ruddy boon getting it into peoples back yards. Remote control as well.

 

The concept was a good one but never took off because - the chipper manufacturers were happy it added to the machine but didn't want to promote it as it then meant they wouldn't sell a tracked chipper - it was too expensive for what it was - could be a bit faster - solid construction but a few things that could have been made better.

 

What we need is a clever arbtalk member to somehow get a hydraulic drive off the pump and then you'd have more torque for a faster speed!

i just put 8x4 boards down & they fit in to the plant trailer no prolem

i live in a retirement ground mike, these gardens are manicured, you must admit turning them on the hard isnt exactly smooth, i feel i am going to rip the tracks off, it just seems really sore on the tracks,even when you do it super slow, and the thought of carrying 8x4 plye about is a ball ache,going in straight lines is fine and if you dont mind making a mess then you will get them into some awkward places, the vid would be great rob, but what i am dreaming of is something with 4 wheels of its own
