I'm not surprised he was "off" with you for being short with him on the phone!

 

His car broke down, he can't get himself and his work colleague to work. And he's probably going to get a bill to fix his car.

 

The last thing he needs is his boss getting on to him.

 

Hang on, who's paying the wages? Who's finding the work so the employees can earn a living? Who's careful planning to keep them all gainfully employed has been chucked into a cocked hat and messed up? Of course the employer can be a little "short" when his days have been messed up out of his control. I'd be a bit peed off myself. Of course, then you realise that there is nothing you can do to change it, and you hastily re-organise the day and everything works out in the end. It's not the lads fault if the car plays up, or the other ones fault that he needed a lift, thigs happen, but people need to remember who pays the wages these days. :001_rolleyes:

I could understand irritation from either party, it's not ideal, but if it was my car broken down I'd be annoyed if my boss treated it like an excuse.

 

If you have a great attendance record, good work ethic and are a loyal company employee, it would be extremely galling to me if I couldn't make it in for a genuine reason and was treated as lazy or unreliable.

 

People get ill, cars break down, etc. it sometimes is unavoidable.

 

FWIW I've been off ill 4 days in the last 3 years.

True. When one of my guys car had a puncture (and no spare), I called him a ****, drove twenty miles with a compressor and repair kit, and fixed it. For free.

 

When they are drunk, you have every right to be angry. But a broken down car and a genuine apologetic phone call is different.

 

Your attitude to a 'genuine' reason will of course depend upon the employee in question's previous attendance record.

I feel so sorry for youngsters these days, they have to get to work on time and then work for their money. You employers should be ashamed of yourselves.

 

Quite right Mick!!!

 

I think if they wake up a bit tired or it looks like it might rain, the employer should pop round to theirs and put their wages through the door (so they don't need to get out of bed):thumbup1:
