I find the X27 is great on easy splitting stuff ( syc etc ) and can make a quick job of it due to the Teflon coating and being razor sharp but gnarly old stuff needs a mechanical splitter of some decryption . Its not a conjurers wand !!!

Well I used my cheap modified maul and some £4 Silverline wedges with a 4lb hammer the other day and they got the job done with no drama so I'l be keeping my money in my pocket for a while longer I think it's more a lust have than a must have but still tempted although now I've seen the Bahco axe that looks like my kind of thing as I am a fan of Bahco.

Na the helco 2000 series is a great splitting mauls £75ish easy changeable shafts or heads lol

Never used the gransfors but they look the mutts. I had broken 2 of the Helko Varios before now. Don't rate them.

 

I quite enjoy using a very old Elwell 4.5 I found in my old mans garage. Cleaned it up and reprofile and then sharpened. Only problem is it is so sharp it sometimes penetrates without splitting and I cannot get it out.

 

Other than that I use whatever is at hand.

Do you need to keep them sharp, I always thought that splitting axes were meant to be blunt. It did surprise me when I received my Fiskars that it was pretty sharp.

 

I agree with that, a dull edge is best for splitting, stays in the grain without cutting through into next grain and hindering splitting.

But each to their own!

Are you refering to the maul, possibly wrong peicture I thinkk the x46 is this maul.

nothing gets close to a gransfors maul, possibly the wetterling that's about it.

 

don't waste your time with the x27, go straight to the best splitting maul ever made

I have looked around for this model and one link took me to Ray Mears site where i believe its the same axe but says it has Rays name on the handle instead of the makers name!!!

Do you know of anywhere else for a good price please??
