Why do I bother?

After reading, creating and contributing to a few threads recently, I'm begining to ask myself why I bother?

In sharing information (of which I am but a minor contributor), which I think is relevant to the running of a tree team(s), I seem to be at odds with some of the posters. Not a problem for me, however there is a certain undercurrent of members who love to drag the threads down by there gleefull non adherance to legal requirements and flaunting it. For example the recent threads on LOLER and the NPTC updates. Some understand that such legislation is crutial with regards to there "duty of care " as an empoyer of direct staff or subbies, myself included and appreciate the input to help me fight through it.

I don't take the posts personally, however more thoughtfull posting and constructive debate on the pros and cons would perhaps help to consruct better threads, encouraging others to participate.

Just my thoughts.............................

I agree to a certain extent. (just hope it wasnt aimed personally). I enjoy arbtalk as a means of discussing my love and passion for all things trees and climbing. But i also see it as if I were down at the pub with some mates, so conversations (threads) do digress, sometimes very quickly. I appreciate that It can sometimes be annoying when you are genuinely interested in certain subject matter, and you have to trawl through 8 pages of babble to find something out. A partial amount on inane chatter you really have to be privvy to at time of publishing to even understand. However, if all banter where removed then Arbtalk would merely be a research/ database of relevant information to our industry, and that would be boring. Would it not??

I for one believe it would turn into something that you would only check if you needed information.

Not something you would willingly sign in to, to socialise with other like minded individuals.

Feel free to discuss.

Since I assume that some of your comments may be pointed towards me (which I dont take offence to btw) then I thought I would have a comment myself.

I can only vouch for me but I do find it difficult to stop think and methodically construct a post that would allow me to show what my opinions are and to also sit on the fence about it at the same time which IMO is what happens quite often.

I am not the best person to try and get my point across clearly and precisely.

My opinion on most of the recent H&S issues is that yes a lot of it is about us not visiting the hospital or more importantly the funeral parlour, but I also think a fair percentage is just BS and arse covering.

If people didnt post there views either right or wrong it would be a boring place to be.

Speaking as a rank amateur compared to the majority here - DON'T STOP. Firstly and foremostly it's a free country; you're allowed to say things others don't like. And long may it continue. Secondly the best conclusions are drawn only after as much info as possible is put forward. So if Fred says X and Bert says Y I know there's an option. If Bert is censored in some way I don't.

Live with the contributions you don't like and benefit by those you do.

You're doing nothing wrong but neither are others.

Long live Status Quo!

Pete, I would have thought you were an advocate of free speech, not trying to start a communist state are you ?? :001_tongue:

You will comply....

You must comply...

I personally like to have a good whinge, I can't whinge to the wife about tree stuff, so it has to be here to people who understand and give a damb

I personally see legeslation as something that is there to protect those who are employed by someone who doesn't give a damb or someone who cuts corners and risks lives, many on here probably already do what the legeslation is telling them to do, but without being forced to do so and I think that is the crux.

Take vibration records, I believe it should be down to the equipment manufacturer to sort out the vibration issue by design and technology, it shouldn't be down to every man jack to keep records, the hse should be on their case, not ours.

There you go, you've got me on my soap box again you bugger :001_smile:
