alright - so there is this work experience girl - who has told me that under no circumstances should we prune trees in winter, and that the best time to prune tree is in summer.....

any one wish to add their 50p's worth to this as i'm of the school that the best time for most trees to be pruned in when they are dormant, preferably just before bud burst, (though not all species)

I and most people on here do prune trees all year round, (with a few exceptions)

best time to prune is just before your mortgage payment is due.

as long as you are not doing one of your 70% crown reductions!!

i work all year round but will put a job of till winter, when the tree is dormant, if there is big limbs coming off

touch wood i have trimmed all year for over 10 yrs and not had a problem.

I do avoid if in flower, if possible as they are budding, when we r in the middle of a drought and most importantly if we are experiencing a very hard frost/ snow fall. the last is aimed a bit more towards the conifer hedges tbh.

I remember being told that pruning should be done in the winter...Never summmer...

Then I was informed that we pruned in winter because "back in the day" when tree surgeon was a new fangled term, the tree work was done by the gardener types. Nothing much to do in the garden in Autumn/winter so the trees got done. Thus in was ingrained into our pysche that trees are to be pruned in the Autumn/winter.

Either way, we prune all year round, species dependant and sometimes any species, because the customer wants it done and if we don't do it someone else will. :001_smile:

Can be species dependent in order to get required results ie pruning for fruit.

I avoid just after leaf flush and around leaf fall. That's when energy reserves are lowest.

I agree
