Looking at getting my first land rover

hey all,

 

looking for some advise, im looking to buy my first land rover its going to be a defender because thats about the only thing i can insure thats not going to break the bank, so im looking for things to looking out for an things to stay away from. im hoping to have a budget of about 3k.

 

Also looking for advise on insuring it as well. e.g. which companies to try? whats the difference between commerical and normal insurance.

 

its going to be my daily run about.

buy a fourtrack not a defender as it wont go wrong ever 5 min. Also 3 grand isnt going to get you much in landrover terms. I have also wanted a defender but sometimes you have to think with your head not your heart. good luck

youre only decent engine option for 3k is gonna be a 200tdi, maybe a 300tdi-exactly same engine, just diffrent cowlings

what body type you looking at (what you going to use it for?)

what wheelbase?

I agree with Stu.

 

Your only going to be buying a bag of spanners for 3k

 

You will get a half decent non landrover for that sort of money

 

I spent 7k and had loads of work to do on it.

Well it depends on what you want to use it for but I would stay away from the defender and put your money into a discovery. You will get a lot more car for your money and it will be much less likely to have been “messed around with” by previous owners.

Agree with the rest, i have had a defender and a disco, loved them both but for 3k you will get a runner but thats about it. also for this money think where your going to park it, sounds daft but for 3k you WILL get an on going oil leak, i have on both vehicles, had a re build on the defender and it still leaked a bit, think its a landie thing..........still have another though.

Take someone who knows about land rovers and what to look for when you go look at one, i didn't and bought what looked like a peach but turned out to be a complete raspberry and it is now costing me about £500 to put right what was wrong with it. Also go for one of the tdi's as the 2.5TD is the most gutless engine ever to come out of lode lane. Get hold of a couple of the land rover magazines and have a look through the classifieds or try these websites:

Ditto what stu said about the fourtrack, but to be honest you have a lot of choice other than Dihatsu. Look at Isuzu trooper, nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero or Toyota landcruiser.
