Million pound Transit

Rough Cutter’s recent slagging off of my doggy old Transit got me thinking.

 

It’s a battered old truck, but I’ve always said it’s a work truck, not a w anker truck.

 

It carries chip, logs and rakings, that’s it’s job.

 

18 years old.

 

No bells, no whistles, no air-con, no adblue, no ECU, no LEZ, no LGBT, no money back, no guarantee.

 

I bet it’s done over a million quids worth of tree work in its time, though.

That’s £300/day for 200 days a year.

 

Not all my money, a £900 day might be halved in wages for hired in help, but the truck has done the shifting.

 

How many modern trucks will earn a million quid?

Nice write up Mark, good way of looking at it, if your suited and its doing what you ask then alls good!👌

Moral of your story…… ignore the PRICK that mouths off at every opportunity, he splutters a lot of shite from his lungs, “botty coughing” i believe is the term.

Transit is the backbone of many business owners. Rust buckets apart from that a bloody good tool.

Agreed.

I had my ‘98 from 2001 to 2016, a million quid easy in that time, plus it moved us to France, doing countless trips to Blighty and back and all over south west France working for Brits in the first few years after coming here.

My late dad gave me a lift to pick it up after its tipper body was fitted, I could tell how proud he was that his (up to that point) hopeless son finally seemed to be sorting himself out.

the Mk6 and the later Mk7 do have an ECU - the Mk5 to year 2000 didn't. 

don't knock Rough Cutter - many people deal with loneliness by trolling - I have done in the past, found it helped quite a bit, even the worst troll is still trying to share their love

 

MK7 up to 2014 from 2006.5, Under bonnet, far right, look for 3 chunky wiring connectors leading into a 6x6x2″ aluminium box.. That's your ECU… there's often 2 anti-theft security bolts to defeat that secure a cover over the connector plugs.

In the same way that Americans deify old squarebody pickups etc, we will one day yearn for 1998 Transits. They’re effectively the Brit equivalent, only they don’t look like it because they don’t have a long bonnet and a gun rack. They do have decent sized beds though, unlike what we think of as pickups here, Hilux, Ranger etc. And strong gearing for weight, and business-favourable tax treatment. 
 

“Oh but the yank pickups are all 4wd and massive engines. They’re much better!”

 

They’re not all 4wd and they might be big displacement V8s but they’re yank so they make about three horse per litre. Ever driven a remapped 2.4 Transit? They pull extremely well I think.

I always chose to keep old vehicles going, even now I have a 24 year old  Vitara, bought 4 years old,and a 14 year old fiesta, bought 5 years old no dpf,   because they are simple and I can fix them.

 

The trouble is when you come to replace a vehicle the  prices have increased dramatically and there is little value in the trade in.

My land rover is way older than your pikey wagon and definitely earned more ...
