I am still on the lookout for a Bastard Mastiff, i.e. sommat mostly Mastiff but with hybrid vigor and longevity, preferably with the large skull and Queen Anne legs  front end, like my rescue pup Max was, who grew up into the perfect dog.

Strong, placid, hefted, and absolutely trustworthy with humans and other dogs, and all without training.

I dont imagine I could bring myself to buy into a pedigree Mastiff with their associated health problems, Vet bills and stupidly short life expectancy.

I still miss him.

PP.S

Max's father was a pedigree Neopolitan Mastiff, and his mother, who we named Victoria for her stolid  demeanor and briefly fostered, was a local bred bitsa/Banndog/Pitbull/nondescript solid mongrel with a sweet sweet temperament.

I’m more of a small dog man, less shit, fits in the work van, unlikely to kill other dogs/people.

My BIL has two mastiff type dogs Canin Corso or something.

Overbred and too much slobber.

The dogs or your brother in law?

Ah!, A short smooth coat is a must!

Mind you the Newfi breeding would be happy with the ponds, 'cept they would then wander into the house to shake themselves, before hopping on the couch.

I thought Igor was a little bit temperamental with with people and dogs?
My mate had a smooth haired fox terrier and it was very unpredictable. One minute it would be paws in the air being fussed over and then a mercury-trigger flipped inside it for no discernible reason and it would go full on ballistic. Very difficult to get it to stop..,

Well, he is a bit, the difference is he can’t kill a small dog with one shake.

Igor will sometimes have a sniff of a male dog, he’ll want to play and be fine, sometimes the same sniff and it kicks off, then a third option where he tries to bum them.

Not sure which is worse!
