They use similar to plug domestic drain pipes on sewers. 

Who was the fella that turns skittles on here? I met him once a long time ago, not sure if he could help. Based around the west outskirts of London I think, built like a brick s%it house.

That's him, I fixed up an 880 for him and went to the cash point with him to pay for the work, me in a pinstripe suit and him barefoot wearing a Stetson and dungarees....sort of amused me at the time....would have made a good pic!

Sounds snappy (no grain going through). Softwood probably specified for its chewiness, sort of like pine being used for pit props. You can get stronger but other characteristics are more important.

Yes I've made something similar for re lining pipes before .
