Dogs - how do you make it work?

Hi all,

I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a dog. Me and the better half are both on board, but we aren’t sure about leaving the dog at home during the day. We both work…

Does everyone here take their canines to jobs with them, or have someone at home? Or are we best off forking out for a dog walker every day?

Any dog pictures appreciated!

Always took mine every day unless the ex Mrs was working from home, depends what you’re doing,,I’ve recently taken some work and one of the lads that works the opposite shift to us take his dog on the factory every day, but it’s an old school site.

My dog is ok and calm as you like in the pen at home.  If we need to I will leave her at home as the kids are back for 1430 ish.  They then walk her.  If we have to leave her for more than 6 hours I either take her or we get our Tennant to walk her midday ish.

If I take her to work she goes in the cage.  Hence sometimes I leave her at home as I can’t have her running around customers gardens and she is a nightmare for running off after Moose or Deer.

If you can't take it with you then don't get a dog. Cruel to leave it alone at home all day.

Cats are a good halfway house, they can do as they please and you still get affection in the evenings by the fire.

I have a habit of finding kittens on jobs, three at the yard and two at the house now...

They're social animals, I reckon penned up all day and they are not socialised. If you choose the right breed maybe not so bad... but the types featured on ArbDogs... they need to be out and about.

Dog walker is 1 hour out of 8 or 9....

Also consider effective recall training else walk them on the leads everywhere there are things they might want to chase (rabbits, birds, horses and sheep, toddlers, children on bikes, runners, cyclists, postmen... some dogs are better than others).

I know a few guys desperate for another dog but with both of the couple working the well being of the dog takes precedence

Igor comes to work every day, except in the real heat.

Its ok, but sometimes when I come out of the tree and have to walk him it can be a pita.

Plus tummy rubbing duties can be onerous.

Generally he’s pretty good, but it can have its downsides.
