Saw your post on FB Pete.

My 2 liter bi turbo is averaging 21mpg as well, which shocked me a bit.

Mostly towing with the Avant on a trailer or a chipper of course but still…thirsty.

On a civil note Mick I had the 2 litre biturbo as a courtesy vehicle when my 3.2 was  having its chassis swapped. I can’t complain in regards power or towing ability which was hands down superior to the 3.2 manual but the fuel consumption was terrible, when towing my Trakmet mill I was averaging 19mpg on a run from Aberdeen to Inverness.

My Iveco manages 28mpg doing regular tree work towing (had to use an online converter)

When towing the tractor on the Ifor it can be 23-25mpg

When I look online at newer trucks and cars, I notice little improvement in fuel consumption.

My old Kangoo used about the same as my recent one and they were ten years apart.

21 to the gallon is more like a 50 year old 3 litre Capri!

Transit is much better.

But there you go, 213 hp from a 2 litre engine, it’s not going to come from fairy dust.

I agree. People like to read off the computer and claim to get 40mpg towing but you just don't.

Modern diesel engine 'improvements' are all about emmissions. EGR, addblue, DPF, all the stuff that gives you trouble does absoloutely nothing for economy. Common rail technology was the last big leap foward and genuinely did lead to considerably better economy by being able to vary the fuel pressure and timings on the fly.

There was a Guy Martin thing ages ago talking about trucks and the newer engine stuff.

He said something like a modern Diesel hgv injector fires 14 times per stroke to improve emmisons and do less mpg than the late 80s and the old mechanical diesels.

I remember that.

A friend of mine runs a few trucks and he confirmed that mile for mile trucks have become harder on fuel, yet cannot (legally) tow any more.

Not gonna get any of the older drivers back into a manual with pas and no air con now anyway, no matter how nostalgic they may be! The mechanics on the other hand... so sick of daft problems they'd happily go back to the 90s machines.

Well yeah, but my old hilux would not have got out of second gear pulling the loader on a trailer.
