My other favoured source are the splinters that come off when I am chopping my main logs, mostly they are perfect kindling with no effort at all. That all goes into a box behind my splitting area and dries slowly to be good for the winter. Anything left from that in the summer is perfect BBQ wood too.

I do this too, I put two plastic crates under the splitter when I’m using it. Once they’re full, a quick shake gets rid of the smallest of stuff and I’m left with loads of good kindling. I leave it in the crates to dry and it’s useable within a few months.

The other thing I’ve found great for kindling is poplar. It’s dead easy to split and dries really quickly.

sycamore splits very easy. split like leaves of a book with splitter then finish with hatchet

Sycamore is the least labor intensive fire wood going be it kindling medium logs or big logs . Seasons fast and splits easy peasy .

Heard of some people ringbarking trees to season wood standing in the US.

Not sure if would work in uk climate....

Sap is carried up the sapwood, nutrients that feed the roots travel down under the bark so ring barking will kill the tree but not necessarily make it dry quicker.

Sour felling is where you fell the tree in full leaf and then don't immediately sned it, so the leaves continue to transpire and lose moisture from the stem
