Oak beam above burner

Merry Christmas everyone

 

My parents have had a log burner in there house for 35 years. New sweep came in and condemned it as the Oak beam is to close. And the burner is too big for the room!? He tried selling a new burner and install etc. Anyway to solve a problem that's never been a problem, could I screw a sheet of non combustible material to the bottom of the  offending beam? Just to please a concerned sweep?

I doubt anyone other than the Environmental Health or Building Control of the local authority can condem anything.

 

Download Part J of the Building Regulations and compare the distances from your stove or flue to the nearest combustible surfaces and then think about what mitigation is necessary.

Well this is what I said lol. 

He was recommended by a friend. But what he failed to say is he ended up replacing 3 log burners and all installed by him! 🤔

Smell a rat there mate. Just get someone else

If you cover the beam if its to close to comply with distance to combustables  there has to be spacers so theres an air gap between the beam and  metal , it also has to be a certan thickness metal...

I would not worry . Oak burns slow anyway 🙂 . Seriously get a set of brushes and sweep it yourself for the next 35 years .

Or.. take out the oak mantle and put in a concrete oak effect one? Cheaper than a stove

Or fcuk the sweep off and keep doing what you have for the last 35 years .
