I'd be using them for water storage I think, suitably reinforced around the sides if necessary. (Water is going to be at a premium soon, as we've had no rain to speak of in weeks now. )

Might as well bury or cover them to stop algal growth.

I got the submersible pump out to pump water from the capped well into two butts today as they were dry.

Yep, exactly what I was thinking actually. If I had the luxury of more time that's what I've always wanted to do. As well preventing algae, it would also free up premium real estate in the garden. It seems to me that the square nature of IBCs makes them particularly suitable for subterranean installation.

My butts have run dry already, and I have a few.

I’ve tried them as giant plant pots but found they did go out of shape

a few old posts could sort that though

I think somebody on here years ago posted photos of IBC liners they were using as raised beds, with a simple strip of wood screwed round the outside to keep the shape

Edit -  it was @Woodworks page 2 of this thread

All good ideas chaps.

I have raised veggie beds, I have slate crates to line with dumpy bags for 'alternative' planters and I have a pair of 1200L non-bunded oil tanks on 600mm pedestals for rainwater harvesting from the roof of a 6x9m Sussex barn.

Sooo.... if anyone wants to make their own posh planters or harvest their own rainwater I have just the things for you...
