Not very original, but I’m sure we’ve all heard ‘You’re not allowed to fell oak trees - they’re protected’.

Nothing close to J and Dan’s belters yet!

I did have a 15 minute conversation with a couple of awfully nice ladies who trotted through (on their horses, I should clarify) site today. They have a farm up the valley and were also concerned a bit about the works. I had to explain forest management for them, and stress that if people want products like oak framed houses, oak trees have to be felled.

Either way, had more praise from the National Trust for the work on the first side of the site, so all good. No actual objections or complaints, which isn't bad going for a 950 tonne job in a public place in mid winter.

If people want oak J, they should just buy it from timber merchants.

They’ve always got loads.

It’s disgraceful felling trees to get it instead.

One of the shoot syndicate in the Wood I manage was upset that I was felling Oaks.

He said that they represented our country's heritage, that the British Navy had been built on the back of them.

Go figure!

I actually had a bloke say that to me once . It was only a small job cutting up a snapped out limb from a large ash . To the untrained eye it could of looked like I had felled a tree . He said what are you doing . I said I will just cut it up for fire wood ( not yet knowing his attitude toward me ) He said I was disgusting and why don't I just by some fire wood like every one else ?  I had no answer !
